  • I am here because I am starting out. I had accrued a reasonable amount of cc debt, got rid of it, and am starting from scratch. I am steadily building my EF, and am living very frugally. Have not quite decided what to do beyond my savings, though I know I should think about investing. I have a boyfriend who loathes usury and is a firm believer in not having any debt. He is also just starting out, but has always been on the frugal side.

We have no children together and 1 codependent cat.

    • Hello,
I am new here. I've been reading these forums for a few weeks and have decided to join. I am a SAHM to a 2 year old boy and 6 year old girl. I became more interested in personal finance after my daugther was diagnosed with Leukemia last fall, only 2 months after our son's diagnosis of mild cerebral palsy. Due to her suppressed immue system and the number of times we have to go to hospital appts for either kid, I had to limit store runs and over the course of the last 6 months I am amazed at how much I was spending before all this happened. Life threatening illnesses make you change your perspective on what you really value in life and what is important.
My husband works so hard so that I can be a SAHM to our kiddos and I'd like to step up to the plate and see how I can do my part managing the money he earns better than I have in the past.

I've been reading the declutter sections and it looks like that is my next challenge. Yikes! I'll just keep reading and learning for a while and ask questions as I go along.

      Have a good day, everyone.
      Jenn

        • Hi there!

My name is Carol and I am a divorced mother of 2 great children. I used to work for a large corporation and was "right-sized" a few years ago. Since then I have been learning the entreprenurial ropes and really enjoying the experience. I have always done a budget and raised my children pretty much on my own. My house is paid for, I have a good retirement fund and I have helped others get out of debt and learn to live within a budget (hate that word)/spending plan.

Glad to have found this site. Keen on learning more and offering my experience and knowlege where I can.

          • Hi Everyone

Hey Everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself.

I'm currently digging myself out of a mess of debt. I came from a poor family, so I never had a lot of financial education. Outside of economics, there weren't any finance classes at my high school. So, I went to a small private liberal arts school, racked up around $80k in student loan debt ($120k after maturity thanks to interest), around 10k in credit card debt, a 7k private loan, and 20k in car loan debt.

So far the credit card debt is paid off, I'm working at getting rid of the private loan, and then I have the car loan.

I have two months worth of bills in the bank in an emergency fund. I also have a number of minor investments in realty trusts, electronics, entertainment, and both a 401k and Roth IRA that I actively contribute to.

I know my financial situation isn't great, but it could be far worse.
I'm learning a hell of a lot and I think I'll start seeing some light soon.

            So, anyways, hi!

No worries! You gotta start somewhere, and at least you're starting!

Hopefully, your degree lands you a high paying job. That will make getting out of debt much easier for you.

Congrats on getting the CC taken care of already! That's a great start

How much is your car worth? I see that you owe $20k on it... any chance your car's worth more than $20k? Have you considered downsizing the car? If you drop down to a $10k car temporarily (couple years), you could easily cut this piece of the debt in half.

This tells me that you may need to work out your savings priorities. Have you ever done that? I ask because your financial habits are kinda erratic - you're concerned about your debt, but your buying up investments. You have a Roth IRA, but you're holding investments in a brokerage account.

So is your main goal to get out of debt? Increase your current income? Or save for retirement? I can't really tell. Right now you're doing a little of all 3, and I'm not sure if that's intentional or not. I don't really think there's a method to your madness yet My gut feeling is that you don't want your debt around, but maybe you feel as though you're 'supposed' to be investing in stocks and in retirement accounts, so you're doing those because you 'have' to.
I know my financial situation isn't great, but it could be far worse.

Just keep reading the posts, asking questions, looking around, and thinking about your situation. You'll get there!

                • About me:

Hello Folks, my name is Eugene Goldberg; I’m the CEO of the StudentLoansEscape.com. I came into the debt settlement industry three years ago. After graduating from college, I found myself with debts totaling $120,000. My student loans added up to $104,000. They were from three different financial institutions with variable interest rates of 6.49% to 12.95%. I owed roughly $16,000 to credit card companies with variable APRs around 22.95%. Upon graduation in the spring of 2005 I was awarded my Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Economics. At that time, I thought finding a good paying Wall Street job and paying off my loans would be child’s play.
