DebtFree because we only have a mortgage and Broke because my husband is self employed so we have some months that we are broke and other months when we live like we are broke so we can save as much money as possible. Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get my finances in order and create a family budget. I've been perusing the website and there are some great tips on here.

Just wanted to introduce myself.

Ooh, an introduce yourself thread. Ok I'm game, but I'm not sure how detailed I should be.

Stay at home dad, two kids (one's in school). Wife works part-time as a nurse.

Have a house in Tennessee, but we tend to travel around a bit. Currently in Australia.

Our budget is pretty simple. Some things have a set dollar amount (going out to eat, entertainment, date night, misc fund, and son's allowance). Other things we don't have a set budget for (like groceries). Long as we have money in the bank, and are roughly on track with where we want to be, we're good.

Only one credit card, and it has a credit balance (I'll do my best to rectify that soon, it'd be a pain if they decided to send a check to zero it out).

I do struggle with paying more than absolutely necessary for a purchase. I.e., I'd rather get a red-eye flight and save a few hundred dollars, or get the cheap seats at the circus. But occasionally, it's worth the extra money; wife helps me out with this. And I help her keep the grocery spending in check (i.e., I point out that the pantry is overflowing and she's stacking stuff on the fridge and elsewhere...time to go on a spending fast and use up some of this food!).

Um, I guess that's the main stuff financially. Ultra-cheap on things that aren't important to us, a bit indulgent on things that are important.

Specifically, I contract with an auditing company which does premium audits on Workers' Compensation or General Liability insurance policies. I have a degree in Economics from UC Davis and personal finance, especially investments, is my favorite topic. I'm here because my wife enjoys the subject a lot less than I do!
