Ruby Payne is big right now in educational circles about dealing with children in poverty. One of the things she points out, as does the author of Nickel and Dimed pointed out, is these payday loan places are usually located in neighborhoods where there are poor because they either can't or don't know how to use a bank. If you think about it, how many of us had someone in our life who told us about a checking or savings account? Many people do not and probably don't want to appear stupid if they go in and ask. I know in Illinois a month or so ago, one corporation that runs these payday loans was cited for charged such huge fees.

        Hello!

My name is Megan and I'm from Kansas (US). I've been an official lurker for over a year . . . I frequent the freebie section of the forum about once a week and LOVE it. I am going to be eighteen this November but my father is a mortgage consultant and the rest of my family owns a restaurant so I grew up listening to finance-related discussions...and now I'm hooked. At the moment I am trying to make a living as an Independent Mark Representative because self-employment is really all I have time for right now. I am a full-time high school senior and I am enrolled at the somewhat-local community college...so time is something I tend to lack. I'm hoping to continue to find amazing free samples for my family, personal finance advice and maybe even some business advice for my mark business!

            Hello, Jeffrey and Everyone:
I have been lurking here and there -- and this site is fascinating! There are others who think like me! Anyway, I am from Southern California - the land of expense. I have been a saver from way back and this habit has enabled DH and I to pay off our house 4 years ago. DH did splurge on a big truck -- we did payments because it was a 0% loan. Prioritizing "wants" vs "needs" has helped us all along. I also coupon heavily and gets LOTS of items for FREE on a regular basis. I am looking forward to learning much more on our journey to financial independence.

            Thanks for listening.

              Hi Everyone!
This is an invaluable site. I joined a few days ago and have been lurking since then. It is just DH and I. We are both confirmed "savers". I always have been, DH took some convincing over the years. We are not yet debt-free but working on it. I am very interested in the $20 challenge. I can't wait to spend more time on the site. Thanks.

I've been reading this forum for months now, and finally decided to actually post. I think actually participating might help me to stick to my goals since I'll be talking with other like-minded people! I'm fairly new to saving money. No one in my family has *ever* saved money, and, in fact, most live way beyond their means to this day. One day, I decided I just wasn't going to do the same anymore, so I closed my business and moved from the high-cost southern NH area to central Maine where everything is better.

I now am serving with Americorps, so I receive only a poverty stipend, and my husband works a very PT job around my varied hours (mostly for the free movie and game rentals). This is the smallest income we have ever had, and yet it is the most savings we have ever had! I know we can do better, since we still have some debt to pay off, so I hope to become a regular poster around here. I don't know how much I'll be able to add compared to all the experienced members here, but I'm going to try!

Hi, all. I'm Lisa, a SAHM living in the wilds of Missouri. I have two kids, ages 15 and 7, and DH, of course. We've been frugal to varying degrees for a long time, but need to kick it up a notch as we get closer and closer to retirement age. I found the forums through Ima Saver's and LRJohnson's blogs, which I subscribe to for frugal inspiration.
