    • Hey Ann: Welcome! As you have already probably read, alot more than finances go on here. Most talk about recyling, and subjects that you mentioned above. Hope that you stay a while.

          • Hi

This is my first post. I'm hoping to get my finances in control by putting them on the Web for all to see.

I am 27 and living in Washington, D.C. I graduated college late at 24 so I have more student loan than I would like (Title IV aid runs out after 4 years of college and I did 6 years). I also started working later than most people so I haven't been able to save as much.

My negative net worth is slowly creeping above six figures. I figure I should start getting them under control.

I blame my problem on my spending habits in college, being out of work for 6 months in 2005, wasting a lot of money fixing my old car, and taking care of my mom and my girlfriend's living expenses. I also took a bath in the latest real estate downturn as well.

Obviously my spending habits and fixing my old car would be my first priority. Right now I just want a reliable car with A/C that can take the summer heat.

I hope this is a place where we can openly share ideas. I realize that we all don't make the best decisions sometimes, and ideas for improvement are always welcome, but please, be gentle

Thanks in advance for any welcome that may be extended. I hope I can become a good member.

            Cheers!

            • Welcome InDebt. There's a lot of good advice and opinions to be had here regarding saving, debt reduction and investing, among other things, so feel free to ask questions and join in on the banter.

Thanks for the early Monday morning welcome. I've been browsing but I didn't really find the answer to this.

Is it considered bad form to share your income level? I've seen that people have no problems with sharing the amount of debt they have, and neither do I.

But the few blogs that I've seen seem to leave income out of the information that people disclose. Is that really just personal preference or more like a courtesy?

                Thanks. I'm new at this.

To tell you the truth, I don't know. I don't think it's considered bad form though, just a personal preference. If you feel the need to post your income or just want to, go right ahead. Income numbers will come into play when people talk about have 3-6 months of an emergency fund or something like that for example, but you could figure that out on your own without having to post your actual income.

Basically what it comes down to IMO is if you're comfortable with it. If you are, post it, if not then don't. The "community" won't look at it as gloating or anything like that if that's what you're thinking. And they won't jeer either if you think it's too low

That's exactly what I was thinking about. Thanks for clearing it up.

It's just that income is relative to where you live, and while it seems high compared to other areas, folks living in the city are barely surviving on a seemingly high income.

                      • Hello all I'm Steve 33, my job is in transportation doing dispatch/logistics. I live in Marine City MI with my wife and 3 kids soon to be 4(baby due in Nov). I stumbled onto this site doing some various searches on what people think about Dave Ramsey and his ideas. I've been getting more frugal as time passes and I think this site will help me take it to the next level.

                        • Hey Steve: Welcome. Glad to have you here. There are quite a few that follow Dave Ramsey's Plan. If you type in Dave Ramsey at the search area, it should give you any posts about Dave Ramsey.

About being frugal, you're in the right place. I would say that the majority of us here are frugal. You're in good company.

                          • Hi, I'm new to this board and am starting a bit late at age 37. I'm a Civil Engineer working in the waste-to-energy business (specifically biofuel research for a large Irish firm). I am trying to get a grip on my finances and have found the advice here on this site to be very enlightening. I hope to learn more about investing the right way with moderate risks.
