  • I've had a lot of wins recently.

I got 35 items picked up at consignment today. Big deal because whatever doesn't sell gets donated. Whatever was passed over I donated. So in all i disposed of like 6 boxes of stuff so around 100 pieces of stuff easily. I also did a goodwill run already on Sunday of 3 bags and 2 boxes of stuff. My DH said "LAL you are boiling the ocean, please try to do something". He admitted I boiled the ocean and got through something.

So over the past 3 months we had a bit of a tiff over the amount of stuff in the pantry and freezer. I stopped cold turkey buying stuff. Nothing for the freezer, nothing for the pantry unless absolutely we ran out. And now one of our freezers is empty and the other one is so empty the kids said woah the freezer is empty. I also pulled out items from the pantry last week and ate it. I ate a bunch of stuff these past two weeks from the freezer. I have a plan for four more items from the pantry by Sunday. Win is not spending money and eating what we have.

Seriously I know what I just said sounds stupid but it's really stressful sometimes in our space to use it efficiently and I get overwhelmed with the amount of stuff we have jammed into a smaller space for four people. I also gave away 2 dressers and 2 file cabinets today. Our house is finally appearing again.

Financial wins? Checked my airline tickets and saved another $300 by rebuying them. I checked the hotels and saved another $500 for our trip to Japan in August. I managed to use the first class upgrade coupons we had on two different flights. Means I got free value from them. Sometimes they go to waste and we can't use it.

I do CC arbitage and charge and leave the money sitting in the money market for an extra 60 days. Like paying for our new paint job on the house. It's not due until September and I paid it in July. I know it's like an extra $80 but it's something. I do it with all big ticket items along with earning points for CC charges.

Also sometimes like last month I earned an extra $3 from charging shake shack on my CC. All these little freebies are nice adding up.

    • We get notified of class action lawsuits all the time. My wife just got one today. Most of the time they don't amount to anything, but every now and then they do. Also in today's mail I got a check from one for $178.81. It was a case involving a medical supply company that I deal with. I have no idea what the issue was and don't really care. It was nice getting an unexpected check though.

        • Guys,

Here are a couple of wins.

First, the income investing strategy I've been working over the past couple of years is starting to pay off. This week I got paid from my bond fund (BND), from the JP Morgan option fund I've got (JEPQ), as well as from Antero Midstream (AM). Its nice to have the cash coming in on a regular and semi-regular basis. The payments are small - like $15 and $20 each, but its starting to add up.

Second, I've managed to get in the habit of doing push ups and sit up everyday. Which is having a good impact on my self confidence and my energy.

Sharing for everyone who feels stuck or doesn't feel like they're moving forward - even small steps move the needle eventually.

          • Produce for the win !
Our little garden is spitting out; cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, big boy tomatoes, cucumbers and green beans like crazy lately.
Hard to beat good summertime fresh veggies.

Are you personally able to use everything you're growing? Are you giving away or selling any of it? Canning? Making pickles and/or sauces? I know a bunch of people who garden and grow way more than they can possibly use.

                I'm one of those people
We eat and can as much as possible, but we still give a fair amount away
The trouble with gardens, is that everything tends to be ready all at once, and you have a small window to make use of everything.
I actually built a second kitchen in our basement last year for canning.

What we can't use, we give to friends.

I am often the recipient of veggies from gardening friends. Willingly and unwillingly. I enjoy it when I want it and can use it, like I always look forward to free onions, peppers, fresh lettuce.

But there's a lot of "OMG, I have to give you some of our Broccoli! We have so much of it, it's just going to go to waste!" And so they give me like 3 huge bags of Broccoli, and it's impolite to say no (especially when it's your elderly parents who garden, just for something to do). What the agreement really is, is to dispose of it so they don't have to feel bad doing so. They can pretend I fed an army with broccoli instead of what actually happens, it goes in our yard waste bin except enough for maybe 3 meals.

I do love the free fresh produce. But it comes with emotional overhead.
                    History will judge the complicit.

                      • I've never been the greatest at following through on home projects. Either I buy the supplies and never do the job or I partially do the job but never finish. Since retiring I've been focused on getting better about this.

A while ago I bought a new 4-foot LED shop light for one section of the basement where we only had a single bulb in a socket. Ever since, the light has been lying bulb up on the top of the one shelving unit so it worked and it was better than the single bulb but today I finally went down and actually mounted it to the ceiling so it's shining down instead of up. It's way brighter that way.

Now I want to get one for the other section of the basement but I need a smaller one there. I think they make 2-ft lights so I'll get one of those.

                        • I mounted 3 of those 4 footers for added brightness. My apartment doesn't have any ceiling lights which is weird and I guess tenants here plug in lamps for lighting. Two those 4 footers have mounts for old flourescent tubes which can be replaced. The 3rd one is newer which has a built in flourescent tube which cannot be replaced.

                          • A man at the casino won $10,000. I congratulated him and asked if I could take a pic and he said it's fine. The machines is a $1 Quick Hits with a 2 credit max. His credits was a 0 which was his last spin when he hit the jackpot. So lucky.

When we bought our house, I hated that there were no ceiling lights in the bedrooms as I grew up in a house that had them. Instead, the wall switch controls one of the outlets so you can plug in a lamp. That's great except one lamp doesn't illuminate the whole room the way a ceiling fixture does. That also means you can't really use that outlet for anything else because it isn't always live. You can't plug in your clock or anything that needs constant power. It's a pain.

The newer shop lites are LED, not fluorescent. They've made them resemble traditional tubes but there's nothing to replace. When they die, which should be a very long time, you just replace the whole thing. They've gotten so cheap that it's not a big deal to do so. The new recessed lights in our kitchen are the same way. No bulbs. Just LEDs. If one dies, you pop out the whole thing and snap in a new one.

                              • I see it is same on the east coast as it is on the west coast when it comes to the lack of ceiling lights. In Hawaii every dwelling that I've live in had ceiling lights so when I moved to California was surprised with no ceiling lights and instead having to rely on lamps. Yes, I leave the switch on constantly and use the wall outlet for other electrical devices. You're right the newer shop lights are LED and not fluorescent.
