I used to buy Seiko, Citizen, Invictas, etc. These $7 - $8 cheap China watches works just fine. My only requirement is water resistant watches.

Depending on your level of interest there was a thread on bogleheads about 5k watches started in 2008 and spun off to a more recent thread. 17 years strong. And you may recognize a former contributor here (corn18) who had a large collection.
if you have a few days to read through.

I stopped wearing a watch years ago when I started carrying a smart phone. Occasionally I miss it or still reflexively look at my wrist to check the time, but that's rare. Most of the time I wore a special edition Seiko Mickey Mouse anniversary watch that my parents bought me years ago and I would always get a lot of comments on it. I own several others, too. But watches have become functionally superfluous in the age of smart phones. Now they are more of a fashion statement, except for smart watches I suppose. My daughter has an Apple watch and seems to really like it but I haven't seen any need to owning one.
As for quality watches vs. cheap functional watches, that's certainly not a new phenomenon. You could always go with the $10-20 Timex vs the $100-200 Seiko vs the uber expensive Rolex or similar. If all you want is to tell the time, cheap works fine. Maybe it won't last a lifetime and be an heirloom you pass to future generations, but for $10 who cares?Steve
* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I feel lost without my watch, always wear one.
Have owned some pretty high end watches but prefer the simple, inexpensive Timex Indiglo watches. Push the button and dial lights up, much easier to read than glow in the dark type. Plus they are inexpensive to replace in the event you damage or lose one.

Yep, I bought my first Rolex (GMT Batman) a couple of years ago. When I went on my honeymoon to Switzerland many years ago I fell in love with a certain Rolex model but at the time I was young and needed to save for a house, I think the watch I wanted was $2k or so at the time. For years afterwards I'd always window shopped at any Rolex dealer I walked by. Fast forward a couple of decades later and I finally decided to buy myself a watch. Little did I know that almost every popular Rolex watch out there has a long waiting list to buy, that is if a dealer will even sell you one.
I put my name down for the GMT model and the dealer said it might be a couple of years but he'd call me. Over the next few months I'd walk into the store just to make sure he knew I was still interested. Out of the blue 6 months later he called me and said everyone on the list above me had turned it down because they didn't have the money available. I was there in less than an hour and was happy to pay the $10,900. it sold for. I still felt a little uncomfortable in spending that kind of money on a watch though. At this point I'm glad I did and look forward to maybe buying a second watch if I can ever find it available. As for that $10,900. watch I did buy, it now sells for well over $15k used. Not a bad investment! I only wished I had bought one years ago when they were fairly inexpensive compared to now.

Not an aficionado, just someone who typically wears a watch. It's been cheap Timex digital watches and cheap G-Shocks for years, and the reason I like G-shocks is because of the larger size. However, I'm currently wearing my most expensive watch ever, a Garmin. It's a fitness tracker which I've used since 2023, but it's dumb enough so that I'm not wearing a computer on my wrist. I'm not ready for that.History will judge the complicit.

I hate wearing any form of jewelry. I have a Fitbit watch for which I am occasionally in the habit of wearing. If you want to count my dive computer, Shearwater Perdix 2, as a watch, then it is going to be more expensive than 99% of watches at about $1,200. But it is only while diving.
From a pure "want" stand point, there is one watch I have drooled over for a decade. Victorinox Airboss Mach 6 Model V251188 in blue. At around $2k I could never justify the purchase, but boy did I like looking at it on line.
I have purchased a couple of antique pocket watches, one at $100 and the other at $450 I think. I wish I knew more about them.
I would like to have a tourbillion movement.

Definitely not a aficionado either, but I do love wearing a watch for habit and routine. I was hoping to find some watch collectors on this forum but realize it's a pretty small community. My daily is a G-Shock GA-2100 and hands down my favorite watch. It kind of reignited my watch interest, which started back during covid lockdown. Then I got my favorite Seiko (SARB033) which I paid too much for a used one 2 years ago, but do not regret. To buying my first Swiss watch last year, Longines Dolce Vita as a reward or moment for completing my degree. Those three I will never sell or get rid of.
Yes, a $10K watch will tell the same time as a $10 watch. I will be the first to admit that a watch, no matter the brand, cost, or style, is simply an indulgence. Or fashion accessory or flex to others, but they can still be a work of art to wear. At the same time, 99.9% of the general public does not care or notice an individual's watch. But I truly believe watches don't just tell time, but a story, or memory to the owner. Years ago my mom gave me her grandfather's Waltham pocket watch she paid to have restored, which I wear it on holiday gatherings for her. I don't expect others to have that kind of sentiment for an object, but it can represent a different intangible value.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

If money was no object I'd get a one from A.Lange & Sohne.Originally posted by myrdale View PostI would like to have a tourbillion movement.
Everyone talks about Swiss watches, but German craftmanship is on a whole other level. Even Glashutte Original watches I'd love to afford.

Agree, in the few years I've had my Rolex the only one's to even notice or say anything are other Rolex owners. Funny story, I was out to dinner with my brother and sister in-law and they have no idea what kind of watch I have let alone know anything about Rolex's. Out of the blue another Rolex owner walked up to our table to compliment me on my watch. Needless to say it suddenly became the topic over dinner.

Just WOW on the price. Assuming I am doing my math right, 730,000F = $910,000 !Originally posted by cypher1 View Post

I often get complements of my watches at the gentlemen's clubs by the exotic workers. They salivate when I tell them it's a $5000 Omega diver's watch, lol. Little do they know it's only a $7 cheap China watch. A nice watch makes for a good conversation ice breaker. I've been known to also tell a little white lie about my profession with the ladies saying that I'm a doctor or an attorney which makes them double down on their game and I never cease to be amazed at their gold digger skills, lol.

James you're missing the whole point. Why would I want to settle down with 1 woman when I can get a different one every week. lol. I have a millionaire friend who lives in Florida who I meet in TJ every chance he gets. He cannot get enough of it. If you're a single guy and want to meet you are more than welcome to join us. The gentlemen's clubs in TJ are nothing like USA clubs. I'll leave it at that before I get carried away and go too far, lol.
