  • My dd20 is moving into an apartment at school this year. Yesterday, I spent some time going through my linen closet and got out some kitchen and bath towels she can take.

I still have a lot I can get rid of, but like most other extras, I hold on to them with thoughts the kid will need/want them when they move out.

    • I decided to clear some stuff from the large bookcase in our computer room.

I got rid of some craft stuff from a craft I quit doing quite a few years ago.

I have a bunch of paperwork from my mother's life insurance policy, most of which I didn't need. I kept the actual policy and a few related papers and shredded or recycled the rest.

I recycled a stack of pages from our old day planners that neither of us has used in a very long time.

I threw out a few other assorted bits of nonsense.

I came across another stack of the collector magazines that I've been selling on ebay. I thought I had sold them all but found 9 more issues. These always sell well. I get $3.50 each so that will be $31.50 (minus fees). I started scanning them and will try to list them tomorrow night after work.

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

      • My friend took his snowboard back which was in storage in my garage. Gave another friend his extra cell phone back which I was using until my new one came in. Gave another friend an Fitbit Surge watch which I stopped using. Returned the last bathroom items for a project from Menards, along with an extra cable modem to Best Buy.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

        • There is an old dresser in the basement filled with old collectibles sale items. I finished emptying out the top drawer tonight. One item added to the Goodwill pile. Two items trashed. Two items listed on ebay.

There are 3 more drawers. Once the whole unit is empty, I will trash it as it is not worth selling or giving away.

          • Neighbors of ours recently moved. My wife saw them today and the wife was commenting how even though they cleaned out a bunch of stuff before moving, she's been shocked by how much they still have and need to get rid of. She thought there was plenty of room at the new place but they took way more stuff than they could possibly use.

Just a reminder of one good reason to keep chipping away at the clutter. If you ever move, the less you have, the better. Why spend the money and effort to move stuff that you don't even need?

Hearing that story made me get off the sofa and do a little more decluttering tonight. Every little bit helps.

            • I went shopping the other day and bought 4 pairs of pants. This morning, I went through my closet and got rid of 3 pairs of pants that are worn out and being replaced by the new ones. I can probably get rid of at least one more pair but some stuff is in the laundry.

I just listed another item on ebay from the dresser in the basement.

              • I just posted another ebay auction which is actually for a lot of 5 items. I actually didn't think these were worth selling but a quick ebay search revealed otherwise so hopefully someone will be interested.

                • A couple of weeks ago, DD rearranged her room a bit leaving an extra dresser that she didn't need but is part of the bedroom set so we don't want to get rid of it. We decided to move it downstairs and replace an old dresser that we were using for storage. The old one is not part of any set. It was a hand me down years ago.

I was thinking about putting it on craigslist to make a few dollars but we just decided to put it out at the curb as tomorrow is trash day. Hopefully, someone will come along and claim it. There are always folks driving around on Wednesday night collecting good stuff like that. I doubt we could have gotten more than $25 for it and we'd rather just be rid of it.

There is another old dresser in the basement where I keep my collectibles stock. I've been working the past week or so to clean it out. I brought up the drawers earlier and will have DW help me bring up the dresser itself and put that out as well. That isn't worth selling. It's pretty much trash already.

                  • So today I was helping my DD pack up to move into her campus apartment tomorrow. In doing so I was giving her things out of my kitchen and did a bit of decluttering. I must have had 15 baby sippy cups, water bottles and cups with straws. I put them all in a box for goodwill. When I have grandchildren I'll buy new ones or have my kids bring extra for their kids.

I also found an old set of walkie talkies I used to give the kids before cell phone days when they roamed the neighborhood. Don't need those either so they are in the box.

And then I cleaned out my turntable. Man the boxes of open uneaten crackers, spaghetti, ice cream cones, cereal, everything stale and is now pitched! That hurts my heart the most, I hate wasting food.

We have yet to come up with a good system to organize the pantry, not over-buy, and not have things go to waste. Drives me crazy too.

                      • Tossed out 14 items today. All random, but most found in a cabinet in my daughter's room. Four very old hand sanitizers, three keys, a small pencil, a sticker, a plastic bag, a plastic jar, and a pamphlet. And we are getting ready to sell two twin mattresses, so I tossed the covers that have been on them.

                        • Hey we're back!! I spent all weekend cleaning the basement. We dropped my DD off at college Friday and it's so nice to get my basement back. I no longer just have paths I actually have open space. I'm so happy

                          • I've sold 2 more of DD's textbooks in the past week. One was actually at a small loss ($0.75). The other earned us back just over $30 so that was nice. And that's 2 more out of the house. Now that's it's back to school time, I'm hoping a few more will sell in the near future. I think whatever doesn't sell once this semester is underway I might just give to Goodwill. We only have 10 books left from 4 years of college. That's not too bad.

                            • I've been so busy this summer with exchange students and family members staying here that I have only managed to sell one of my husband's toys on eBay and cleared the pile of papers off of my desk. I convinced my daughter to box up some old clothes for charity to make room for new ones, at least. I'm in the mood to just get rid of everything again, but I don't have the energy to box anything up. Maybe over the weekend.
