  • I just took 2 more items out of our collectibles room. And I think I've decided to get rid of all of our Disney VHS tapes. I've searched around on ebay and some are selling for $3-5 each but that's really not enough to be worth my time to list and ship them. We have a 2-shelf bookcase that is packed full of them. If we clear that off, it will really open up some space to better organize other things in the room.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

You could always sell them as a batch.

I thought about that. I looked at some recently sold lots and they still don't bring much. Maybe I'll give it a shot and if they don't sell, save them for charity donations.

I changed my mind. I searched a bit more and they just don't go for enough to bother.

I just boxed up 59 VHS tapes to give away! The bookcase is now empty.

We have a variety of items that have lived on the floor in that room. We're going to work on moving some of them onto shelves now that we've freed up some space. That will make the room look a lot less cluttered. It will make cleaning easier too.

          • Yesterday sold an old rocking chair that had just been sitting about for years never really used. I got it for $7 at a yard sale, it went for $20 (though I would have been happy to get $5 for it!) Nice to see some space cleared out in the back bedroom.

            • I got rid of 3 dress shirts this morning. I never wear them. Into the Goodwill pile they went.

              • Gave away a DVD player and remote, a shovel and ice melt to two of my neighbors this week. I'm also letting go of a quilt, two twin sheet sets, a mattress cover, a couple towels, and lots of plastic hangers. We are getting ready to move this fall, from a 2800 sq ft home to a 1700 sq ft home. Lot of furniture is going to go very soon. It's a bit overwhelming, but I'll try to post here to share the process.

                • Did a little work in the basement. Dug into some old stock from when we actively sold collectibles 20 years ago. Threw out two cartons of stuff that’s never going to be worth anything and isn’t worth donating. Threw out and recycled a bunch of other items too. It feels really good to clear that stuff out.

                    8/22

                    1 book - donated
1 stack of used GC’s - used up
                    1 t-shirt - trashed (6 items)

                    8/26

                    1 T-shirt - trashed
1 pair of sneakers - trashed
                    8 ink cartridges - recycled
                    3 cardboard boxes - recycled
                    1 CFL bulb - recycled

Motivated by last night's progress, I went back into the basement for a while today. I particularly focused on one large carton box of stuff. I was able to trash, recycle, or give away almost everything in the box. That box took up a lot of shelf space so it's nice to be rid of it. I may do a little more down there this evening but I'm not sure yet.

                      • Ok I'm new to this thread, so I'll give a little intro: my DH keeps things, sometimes things w/ no real use. He's somewhere between pack rat and hoarder. I've been trying to convince him to get rid of some things. Lately I've been poking around the basement, and if I find something small that is obviously of no use or that we don't need I just toss it. I realize doing this behind his back is not a good idea. Right now I do have a plan- I'm taking a couple of weeks off in Sept. for the Holidays, during which I've asked DH to set aside 1 day for us to work on the basement. I'll see how that goes.

                        • Took five bags to Goodwill for donation, primarily bedding, towels, clothes and hangers. We have moved our girls beds (they are at college) headboards, desks and chairs to our garage in hopes of selling them fast this weekend for a few dollars. This is furniture we bought 12 years ago, and served us well, but we need to downsize and find different furniture.

                          • We are decluttering a TON this week/weekend. My fiancee and I have lost over 200 pounds collectively and have a huge amount of baggy clothes that are far from fitting now. I had no idea how much stuff we had until we started going through it!

I'm thinking selling some of your stuff for extra money.

We are definitely going to be doing that with some things...I have a dead MacBook that a computer store nearby is going to buy for parts. I've also got this antique bed warmer that has literally been collecting dust in a closet... and who knew we had so many paintings? Haha. What we can't sell we will be able to write off as donations elsewhere, I'm sure.
