  • 2022 Decluttering Thread

It's a new year and time for a new thread. Let's get to work clearing out the clutter and simplifying our spaces and our lives. I'm off today and will find some decluttering to do and report back later. I wish you all a year filled with improving your lives by removing clutter.

I have a lot of clothes from the 90’s / 00’s that I should probably sort through. Hard to believe they are 20+ years old.

plus a few jackets including my favorite Starter winter jacket that is easily 30 years old. The one sleeve is torn (previously sewn in another spot) and it is a medium but I continue to wear it. I did order a Carhartt winter jacket and will attempt to retire the Starter jacket. Not sure I can bring myself to throw it out.

Not 5 minutes after I started this thread, my wife came in and said she just watched a video from a sewing group she's in. They are kicking off a decluttering project for the new year. It's focused on cleaning your sewing area and supplies but you know how once you're in that mindset it spread to everywhere.

I told her a few things that I've done in the past couple of days and I said that there are some things I need us to work on together. She's fully on board with that and said to just let her know when. On my list are our bookshelves, our travel/duffel bags, and an accumulation of things under one dresser in our bedroom.

Just standing in the bedroom talking I asked her about a couple of things that are now in the Goodwill pile so we've made progress already: a DVD and a reusable tote bag.

A great way to do this is on the first day of the month get rid of one thing, day 2 two things, day 3 three things, etc. I actually think it goes better if you do it in reverse order - 31 things day one, 30 things day two, etc. Mainly because you’re more motivated to get rid of things in the beginning, and you have more things to get rid of. And if you and your wife each do it, you’ll get rid of double the stuff!

          Started one ebay auction tonight

Boxed up and put away in the garage a spare toaster oven that we have from when my old office closed (I had bought it so it belonged to me).

Put away the last of the Chanukah decorations that were still lingering in our sitting room.

            Listed one item on ebay.

Photographed two more to get them ready to list.

              Listed two items on ebay.

              ETA: And one on Marketplace

I also did some cleaning in our computer room/home office. Got a couple of little things thrown out, a couple on the Goodwill pile, and a couple that will be put where they belong downstairs when I go down.

I just reviewed my unsold ebay items and was able to relist 4 of them. I lowered the prices, changed from auction to fixed price format, and allowed offers. Hopefully that garners some buyers.

One other item got a bid today so I'll get that ready to ship out once the auction ends and the buyer pays.

                Added another ebay item.

My wife and I just went through all of our duffel bags, backpacks, and totes. We got rid of 5 of them. Not coincidentally, all 5 were bags that we didn't purposely buy. Two were free from DSW when DW and DD bought shoes. One came with a carry on suitcase we got years ago. One was an employee gift at work. One I got from my cousin's house - he got it as a gift from the builder when he bought his house. I think there's a good lesson here. Just because you get something free or as a gift doesn't mean you have to like it or keep it. We probably knew when we got each of those that we didn't really want or need them but they went into the closet anyway until today.

ETA: One of those unsold ebay items that I relisted just sold. Someone made an offer and I accepted it. That took all of an hour, maybe less.

ETA: Another ebay auction just ended with a sale. It was a small one but two more little items out of the house.

ETA: Got 2 more items listed on ebay.

It's been a productive day. I get so much more done when I don't have to go to work.

It's early in the day but I figured I'd start a post and edit it later if/when I do more.

I listed one (well actually a lot of 2) item on ebay. It's actually the first listing of a car show dash plaque. My cousin had about 250 of them and I want to start selling them. They go for up to about $4 or $5 each. I'd be happy to get even $2 or $3 each. I want to list a bunch and offer to combine shipping if someone buys multiple. I only listed the one just now to kind of test the waters and see how it does.

ETA: I realized it didn't really make sense to only list one especially if combining shipping on multiples encourages buyers, so I just listed 3 more. I stated in my descriptions that I'll be adding more daily, so now I just need to do that.

Just accepted offers on 3 lots of magazines on ebay. 35 more magazines going out. That brings my total of magazines sold from my cousin's house to 563 issues.

ETA: 2 more ebay auctions ended with sales tonight. 1 other one didn't sell but I relisted and lowered the price a bit.

Sorry about the flood. I hope nothing important was damaged.

Listed 3 items on ebay. Have 3 sold items ready to go to the post office in the morning.
