Is The Post Office Open on New Year’s Day 2022?

December 30, 2021 by Kathryn Vercillo

Is The Post Office Open on New Year's Day

It’s January 1, 2022, and you’re ready to kick the new year off with a bang. You plan to get a whole lot of things done to get that good start. For example, you’ve packaged up your old clothes to send off to Thred Up for resale. You’ve also finally boxed up that return item you needed to get in the mail. Oh, and you finished up those Christmas cards that you didn’t send out a week ago. You’re all set. But, wait, is the post office open on New Year’s Day 2022?

Pop Quiz: What Are The First and Last Holidays of the Year?

What’s the first holiday of the new year? New Year’s Day, of course. It’s January 1st, so no other holiday could come before it.

What’s the last holiday of the year? Well, the last day of the year is December 31st, so it must be New Year’s Eve right? Wrong. It’s actually Christmas Day. Why? Because New Year’s Eve is not a holiday, or at least not an official one. If you check out a list of federal holidays, you’ll find that there are 11 of them, and the last one is Christmas Day.

So, New Year’s Eve is not a holiday, which means the post office is open on New Year’s Eve. But New Year’s Day is a holiday. So is the post office open on New Year’s Day?

Is The Post Office Open on New Year’s Day?

The post office recognizes New Year’s Day as the first official federal holiday of the year. Therefore, the post office closes for New Year’s Day. Since New Year’s Day is a Saturday, many post offices would be closed anyway – or only open limited weekend hours. However, since it’s a holiday, they’ll all be closed the whole day. Therefore, you’ll have to wait to mail out those packages.

When Does The Post Office Re-open After New Year’s?

Usually, the post office re-opens as normal on January 2nd. However, this year, January 2nd falls on a Sunday. Post offices are closed on Sundays. Therefore, you’re going to have to wait until Monday, January 3, 2022 to mail off those first letters and packages of the new year.

Is There Mail Delivery on New Year’s Day?

Post offices may or may not typically be open on Saturdays. However, there’s always mail delivery on Saturdays. So, what happens on New Year’s Day? Post offices are closed and so are their services. Therefore, you will not receive mail delivery on New Year’s Day. The first mail of the new year will hit your mailbox on January 3rd.

When Is The Next Holiday After New Year’s?

With 11 federal holidays in the year, you would expect to have fewer than one per month. However, the next holiday comes up quickly. It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which will be Monday, January 17, 2022. The post office closes for this federal holiday, as it does for all federal holidays. Keep that in mind as you plan your errands and activities for January.
