Is the Post Office Closed on New Year’s Eve 2021?

December 24, 2021 by Kathryn Vercillo

Is the Post Office Closed on New Year's Eve 2021?

2021 is about to end. We’re headed into 2022. Do you have any last minute things that you need to do before that calendar turns from one year to the next? For example, do you have something you want to get into the mail in 2021? If so, then you might find yourself asking, “is the post office closed on New Year’s Eve 2021?”

Why Is New Year’s Holiday So Confusing?

You might know that most places close for Easter and Christmas. And yet, you have questions about what’s open and closed around New Year’s. Why is it so confusing? The main reason is because most of us aren’t even entirely sure whether New Year’s Eve is a holiday or whether New Year’s Day is the holiday … or both? And since different things stay open and closed on those days, it’s even more confusing!

New Year’s Day is The Official Holiday

Even though you probably dress up and head out to drink champagne on New Year’s Eve, that’s actually not the official holiday. If you look at a calendar of federal holidays, for example, you’ll see that New Year’s Eve is never on the list. Instead, New Year’s Day is the day that we honor. Therefore, most businesses and services that close for the holiday will close on New Year’s Day. Some also close, or close early, on New Year’s Eve. However, officially speaking, New Year’s Day is the only holiday.

Is the Post Office Closed on New Year’s Eve 2021?

So, what does this all mean for the post office? Can you head over there on New Year’s Eve and get that last 2021 postmark on your outgoing mail? Yes, because the post office is open on New Year’s Eve. However, they close on New Year’s Day. According to the USPS holiday schedule page, post offices will maintain regular hours on New Year’s Eve 2021. They will close on Saturday for New Year’s Day, remain closed on Sunday since they’re not open on Sundays, and re-open on Monday morning, January 3, 2022.

What Hours Is The Post Office Open on New Year’s Eve?

Post offices nationwide should stay open their regular hours. You can use the USPS store locator to find the specific hours for locations near you. Note that post offices inside of other buildings, such as in grocery shopping centers, may have different hours on New Year’s Eve than normal. Therefore, you should head straight to a regular post office location if you need to mail something out.

Is There Mail Delivery on New Year’s Eve?

Yes, the post office operates normally on New Year’s Eve. Therefore, they’ll deliver your mail as normal. They’ll also pick up outgoing mail from the blue collection boxes around towns and cities. You will not, of course, receive mail delivery on New Year’s Day, with one exception: Priority Mail Express will deliver on New Year’s Day. Note, however, that this is limited to certain areas, has fees, and isn’t always guaranteed. If you’re expecting a package like that, read the fine print on the USPS holiday schedules pages.
