Is the Post Office Open on Thanksgiving?
No, the post office is closed on Thanksgiving. The post office is a government agency, so it follows the federal holiday schedule. Along with post offices closing their doors to observe Thanksgiving, there is also no mail delivery. All services reopen on Friday, November 27, using regular business hours.
Post Office Holiday Schedule
The post office follows the federal government holiday closure schedule. Here are the holidays where the post office is usually closed:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday
- Washington’s Birthday / President’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the post office typically closes on the Monday after. For Saturday holidays, the post office usually observes the holiday on the Friday before.
Post Office Normal Hours
When it isn’t a holiday, post offices rely on their normal operating schedules. While this can vary from one post office to the next, most USPS locations open their doors at 8:00 am or 8:30 am and close between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. There are a few exceptions, however. Certain locations open as early as 7:30 am or remain open as late as 9:00 pm.
Additionally, some post offices have Saturday hours, but not all of them. For locations that do, their schedule is usually reduced on Saturdays, in comparison to the Monday through Friday hours.
If you want to see if your post office is open on a particular day or at a specific time, it’s best to check the USPS website.
Are FedEx and UPS Closed on Thanksgiving?
If you were hoping that you could ship through FedEx or UPS on Thanksgiving, that won’t be an option. Both FedEx and UPS mostly close on Thanksgiving, so you can’t send packages or expect any deliveries on the holiday.
The only exceptions include FedEx Custom Critical and UPS Express Critical. Those services remain operational all year-round, including on holidays.
