  • Netflix password sharing

I don't know if anyone shares their netflix or gets netflix shared. We do, we've never paid for it. But we also don't watch a ton of shows in general. We do not have cable and don't have time or energy usually. So we have Hulu for free with Spotify, my husband loves listening to music and it's such an old subscription we get hulu for free. Have amazon so free shows. And we get paramount with amex platinum. And I paid for a year of HBO max in October to try out. But now netflix is about to crackdown.

What to do? What are you going doing? Or what do you think will happen? Do you think people will pay for new accounts or not care?

I'm not sure what we are doing. I guess we have to figure out how much netflix we use. My BIL pays for that and our disneyplus since he watches ESPN and netflix.

I only saw a headline and didn’t read the article in depth since I am not sharing or borrowing Netflix.

I think the person who is giving out their password needs to connect to their home wifi at least once a month. There might be more to it since that doesn’t seem to make sense or I misunderstand the detail there

I'm fairly read up on it, although I haven't seen anything that says when the new policies will go into effect. I use my ex husbands Netflix. We share a kid who I have primary financial responsibility for so I don't feel guilty about it, especially since most of the time we're watching something its with her. Too many other options out there for me to sign up for my own account especially since they've raised prices.

I am curious if they will actually get to the point of implementing it. My first question is why did they go to the trouble and expense of being installed as an app on every smart TV and getting a button on new remote controls in every hotel if people are going to have to go through a hassle to get a special code to use it while away from home? I get the reason for the change, I don't have strong feelings about it, but as a business model, I do think it will drive down Netflix usage. I've seen a TON of valid situations where exceptions should be granted and Netflix really looks bad if they don't address them. Some of my favs:
      • Sharing an account with your college kids
      • Kids or spouses going through chemo or other extensive treatments that may require extended hospital stays
      • Deployed military spouses not having access to the account they're paying for
      • Actor working for Nextflix, not being able to use their own Netflix account while shooting on location

I share an account with my mom and nephew. I pay for access on up to 4 devices at a time, which costs extra. If mom and nephew can no longer access on my account, then I am going to cut back to paying for 1 device at a time as that is all I potentially use. Or I might just cancel altogether, as frankly the only thing which has stopped me until now is not wanting to cut off mom and nephew.

I am also wondering when these changes will take place.

My husband said it would cause us problems when we're on the road in our RV because we'll be logging in from different devices and IP addresses.

Netflix should take note. They suck and are losing money not because of password sharing but because they got rid of a bunch of popular stuff and have a habit of cancelling stuff after the first season. It might be time to wave their service goodbye for good!
          History will judge the complicit.

Right so my BIL pays for 4 devices to get HD streaming or something. But I'm not sure we are up for paying for that for ourselves. We'd have enough otherwise I'm on the fence and even DH is on the fence with everything that is free or included for us. Right now we are watching young sheldon on HBO and have a lot of shows on paramount plus and peacock.

We don’t share our Netflix account but we do use it regularly when we travel. As long as we can keep logging into our account from anywhere, I’m fine. 90% of our TV watching is Netflix. I’m sure they’ll add a 2 factor authentication which is fine. We actually just checked into a hotel today. I’ll log in to Netflix on the smart TV later.

We don't currently use Netflix (too much content was getting really dark and/or uninteresting for us), so we won't be directly impacted. Though I think my SIL has logged into our TV with her Netflix account, so maybe we do have access to it. We currently use Hulu, Disney+, and Paramount+.

My concern with these sort of restrictions, as riverwed mentioned, is the fact that I'm often gone from home for weeks or months at a time with the military. We'd need to figure out some way to work around the barriers if those policies become widespread. It would make sense, though, if they would allow you to validate a legitimate need for multiple primary locations, such as for military members, college students, or similar where it's actually for a single family, but circumstances require separation.

We use Netflix when we travel, so we'll see if that becomes an issue.
I used to watch Netflix more, but there hasn't been anything on there lately that I've found interesting.

For those who say they can't find anything to watch on Netflix, I'm curious what it is you're looking for. Our problem is never finding something but rather choosing something. There are endless options. One thing I love about Netflix is that it has exposed us to so many shows we never would have discovered otherwise, particularly foreign shows. And many of the Netflix originals have been excellent. I'd be perfectly happy to have Netflix and nothing else, though we do enjoy Disney+ too.

I pay for Netflix. Most of it is B rated garbage in my opinion. They have some real gems mixed in, but you have to dig for them. The algorithm they use to recommend shows is problematic also. I get an inordinate amount of Korean horror shows. I've watched one or two in the past, but that won't seem to go away. There seems to be a political agenda they push as well. Watch enough and you'll see a trend.

There may be things that I'm willing to watch on Netflix, and occasionally a few shows that I specifically do want to watch ... But they just don't have many of the shows that we like to watch on the regular. We had Netflix for 5-6 years, but found that Paramount+ & Disney+ covers 90% of what we enjoy watching frequently... so Netflix just wasn't worth us continuing to pay for.

I think not using netflix is finding the time to keep up. A lot of stuff is junk for some reason. I find myself more drawn to HBO, Disney, and paramount or peacock or hulu or even amazon prime.

Letting others use your password is theft to me.

With Netflix cracking down on password sharing, it's making us all reassess our streaming habits.

As for me, I'm not quite sure what the best move is either. We've been sharing Netflix with family for a while now, so it'll be a bummer if that option gets more restricted. I guess we'll have to sit down and see how much we actually use it versus the other platforms we have access to.

By the way, it looks like I found some info on can you get hulu in argentina. Might be worth checking out if you're looking to explore more streaming options. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the situation! It's definitely got us all thinking.
