  • I leave for North Carolina Wednesday morning. I'm not planning to shop tomorrow (though one never knows) so it looks like my total going with me will be $4,524. We picked up one bowl today (paid $4.25, sold for $37.00). I managed to get a lot closer to my $5,000 goal than I thought I would. A week ago I was at $3,727 so I picked up nearly $800 this past week. Not bad at all.

    • I'm listed! Just completed my first ever eBay ad. My item is ready to ship, has a box and packing materials, just needs tape and a label for if/when it sells. The hope is to list a couple more items over the next month or so and work through the pile of special-interest car stuff I'm reluctant to throw out.

      • Ok you guys motivated me to list 3 new w/tags surf shorts which I got from Christmas past. I got more new clothes w/tags such as surf shirts and shorts to list as well. I avoid getting buried in stuff and clean out my closet. Listed each for $15 + $8 shipping. In the surf shops $45.

Great! Welcome to ebay. Please message me any time if you have questions. I'm happy to help. There's also a great FB group called "ebay sellers helping each other". I'm one of the group experts for that group so I answer questions all day long there as well.

If you're willing to share, I'd be happy to take a look at your listing and give you any feedback on things you might want to change. Just send me a link.

            • I am waffling on whether to sell stuff and Disneysteve is an excellent resource. I don't think i have very high value items. As I have been cleaning I realize a lot of stuff I have aren't really sellable.

                • May 2025 wrap up

                  ebay:
                  $768.02 gross
                  $525.40 net

                  Replacements:
                  $0 gross
                  $0 net

                  Marketplace:
                  $15.00 gross
                  $15.00 net

                  Total:
                  $783.02 gross
                  $540.40 net

May was very slow because we were really focused on getting the house ready for the kitchen remodel to start. I was also focused on sourcing china for my North Carolina trip on 5/21. I grossed about $4,000 from that trip but it hasn't been paid yet (probably tomorrow) so it will be on the June total.

I need to get back to ebay but with the house under construction now, it's not happening since I need to go through the kitchen to get to the basement where I store my stock, the family room where I take my photos, and the garage where I keep my packing materials. June numbers will be good because of the payout from Replacements but ebay will probably be very low. I'm also not shopping for china (or anything else) right now due to the construction disruption so July will probably be light, too.

                  • My item sold on an offer...I took $30 on $49.99, which was high, given the condition. It was a set of exhaust tips for a Camaro. I win...it's moments from leaving my garage where this stuff has been sitting for a few years, and would have otherwise gone to scrap. What can I expect for selling fees? This hasn't been mentioned or charged by eBay yet.

I hadn't completed the steps of linking a bank account or verifying my identity, so I did that as soon as I had an offer so I am able to transact. I really don't like the way eBay tried to link a bank account. They wanted me to pass my banking credentials (username/password) through a third party, Trustly. Sorry, eBay, No. I did discover that there's an option to input bank information manually (account and routing number), and now it has to go through verification as well. I've linked it to a clearing account.

As for shipping, seller paid, and it's going USPS. I see the option to print a label. I assume I just stick it on the box? Can I drop it at the PO, or do I need them to verify the details (size/weight) etc. I used the exact dimensions on the box and added just a little more to the weight to be safe, although it didn't seem to change the shipping cost estimate.

                      Congrats on the sale!

ebay absolutely "mentioned" the selling fees. Did you read and review the terms of service when you signed up? There is a whole section detailing selling fees. If the item has been paid for, you can look at the order details and it's all nicely broken down for you. Generally speaking it's about 14% of the total of item price, shipping charged, and sales tax.

As for shipping, yes, you enter the weight and dimensions of the box and purchase and print the label. Best practice is to take it to the post office in person, hand it to the clerk, have them scan it, and get a receipt. You can do home pickup or a self-serve kiosk if your post office has one but neither of those options provides an acceptance scan so you have no proof that you actually mailed it. That can come back to bite you later.

If you are going to sell on ebay, you need to go through the process regarding linking your account because that's how you pay fees and that's how ebay pays you. Definitely go through any verification process they request or else you'll never see your money.

Thanks. I missed the part about fees. I knew there would be some, but didn't see them specifically. My bad. And yes, definitely, I have linked a bank account. I just didn't like the way eBay was pushing to do it, giving up login creds for my bank AND account, routing information, plus having to give my SSN for eBay tax and ID verification.

                        • I'm with ua_guy and at first disliked linking my bank account and preferred using Paypal which is linked to my credit card but when eBay flipped the switch and discontinued using Paypal, I had no choice but to link my bank account. Your item sold quickly good job. My new w/tags surf shorts are still waiting to be sold. On your sold item click on the "view order details," which shows each line item in detail. This was from my old Dell laptop which sold for $55 + shipping, etc.

                          • Also if you click on transaction fees on that order detail page it will give you a further breakdown.

I just assume that I’ll pay 15% of the sale price. It’s not exact but it gets me close enough to have a good estimate of what I’ll earn on an item.

                            • Personally I prefer eBay’s managed payment system now since it’s all in one place. I no longer have to keep going to my PayPal account to see what’s happening or to transfer funds to my bank account. Now it’s simple. Item sells. Buyer pays. eBay pays me weekly every Tuesday without fail by direct deposit to our checking account. I don’t have to do a thing. And all of my seller fees are taken out automatically as well. Easier at tax time too.

                              • I paid $6.70 in fees, plus $12.xx for the shipping label. Buyer paid shipping but it's a pass-through. Seller actually purchases the label with funds from the buyer. I screwed up...I didn't realize I had an old address (15 years ago?) loaded for "ship from" address. So I had to cancel the USPS label. Even though I caught the mistake 3 minutes after I made it, they still deducted the funds from my proceeds for the bad label. It's in the process of being cancelled, and I should get my money back. I was in a hurry to get things done this morning...more careful next time.

But, it all worked! - so far! Now I'm wondering what I'll try to unload next...
