  • i hate iphones...rant

So I'm pretty sure I don't hate people who have iphones but maybe I do. I definitely hate apple. I also dislike a lot the fact that so many people have iphones and are so clueless about the rest of the world or android. This is a rant in case it wasn't obvious. So on friday I signed up my DKs for a jump rope clinic. Thought it would be fun outdoors with their friends. Fine. $40 each for 5 weeks. I venmo and then I'm signed up. Well since I texted the lady running the studio she obviously had my number. The time was wrong on the flyer so we were late to the 4 pm class which said 4:30. How did I know? Well the other parent i was carpooling with texted me and asked if we had left. i Said no. I never got the "group" text because I don't have an iphone. Yep if you start a thread and no one has an android you default to imessage. Great thank you apple. Go do your proprietary crap.

I gave the teacher a piece of mind when I got there that if you are going to text parents maybe email or text everyone. Exclusion so I need to have an iphone? The answer was oh they forgot to text me because i had to be a separate thread and couldn't add me. I said restart the thread. Oh the inconvenience. I said so the assumption is that you need an iphone to participate? Trust me I think sometimes people forget there are a lot of people who don't want to participate in iphones and apple products. That people who do so for fiscal reasons, flexibility, and just because they don't want it. Two of our friends got their kids android phones but recently they said they were actually thinking of buying iphones for their kids to participate in texting. seriously? They also got their kids non iphones because it was cheaper. Ugh. Anyway I just hate apple and the way they try to make the rest of the world on their charging cables. They can't use usb C cables. It needs to be their cables. And they need to their own ibuds. Sigh. I hate their ecosystem and the way they behave in their apple app store. But this is probably why we don't buy into the ecosystem. Trust me all the time I hear your kids don't have ipads? No why do my kids need tablets that cost more than the one I use for free?

You should still have gotten the text if the person who created the group included your number. Everybody doesn't need to have an iPhone. That would be ridiculous. I've sent and received group messages many times that include people with any kind of phone.

And they need to their own ibuds.
Do you mean AirPods? You don't have to use those. My wife and I have generic bluetooth ear buds that we got for $30 online. They work just fine and do everything AirPods do.

We have an iMac at home but I have several non-Apple accessories for it so you aren't tied to Apple products for everything.

Nope you can't start a thread of say 10 parents with iphones then add an android user. You have to redo the whole message. You can't add an android user to a imessage thread. You need to start with say 10 iphones and 1 android or else it defaults to imessage and you can't add the android user. I think apple ties you to a lot of propriertary stuff especially the charging cables. It's odd to go to someone's house and they dont' have a usbC Because everything they own is apple. But you go to an android? They probably have a spare iphone charging cable.

I used to have Androids Samsungs. But everyone with an Iphone was singing it's praises. So, when the iPhone 11 came out I got one. And, there are some definite drawbacks with it. Group texting SUCKS. I coach basketball and it was very easy to create a group Team text and plop all their numbers in it. With iPhone omg it was a freaking PIA! It was a more work and I had to always double check that I didnt' forget anyone, etc. I hate the texting on iPhone. I am used to it now so it's OK but I will probably go back to an Android though now my kids have iphones and I occasionally use the facetime.

Other issues with iPhone. It has a built in alarm clock. However, if you turn down the volume at bedtime with the side button it ALSO turns down the alarm volume! This is so stupid! On my android the alarm had it's own volume setting. And when you silence the iPhone, it doesn't silence everything. If you were in a meeting and had your iPhone on silence and someone sent you a video and you touched it , it automatically starts playing WITH sound. What the heck? The built in calculator absolutely sucks! In my android, it had a really nice calculator that showed your addition, subtraction, etc and you could erase it and go be back and review your numbers. The iPhone calculator is like a cheap $2 solar calculator you used to get. I had to down load a decent calculator and it's not free unless you periodically click on a few advertising links. Seems Apple is constantly trying to sell you something thru apps.

The I Cloud thing is awful. Haven't figured it out yet. Doesnt' seem to work at all despite contacting apple. I just save everything to Google instead.

Apple doesnt' even save your User Ids or passwords. You have to set up some kind password manager thing. It's freaking annoying. I have to literally type in my passwords all the time for my Verizon account and so forth. The drawbacks of this phone do not make it worth switching. There aren't many things that I like about it better than my Samsung. I do kind of like that Iphone messages show blue and androids show green. I mean you know if you are talking to an Apple phone at least so then you feel certain they will get your messages.

All in all , it's kind of MEH to me.

Apple doesnt' really want you to use anything that isn't Apple. It makes things more difficult than it needs to be. Like taking out the headphone port. Really? Now I have to use their lightening port one, but if I have those plugged, I can't also be charging my phone at the same time. No I do not want Air pods or Air buds or whatever they are. They are way too small and I would lose them. I like a regular plug in pair of real headphones. I do have some Bluetooth beats now so I use those. But to me it's one less thing that makes the phone a bit less useful to me.

Ah. Can't say I've ever tried to do that. I've only started messages with people having varied phones.

There are really great things about an integrated ecosystem and proprietary devices. I've never had the group text issue, maybe I just haven't had it yet. My team at work uses a mix of apple and androids and we've never had any issues.

It's not for everyone, but there are some great advantages.

Might also add that so many people only know how to use facetime? We have friends who we stopped talking do when we moved because the mom only knew how to use facetime. I suggested hangout, messnger, skype, teams, zoom. Well that tells you something how able people are able to actually use. Anyone try and text a group with only 3 apple iphones then add someone whose a android. It won't happen.

It’s not Apple’s fault if people are stupid.

I have an iPhone and an iMac. I virtually never use FaceTime. I use Zoom and Teams all the time. I used to use Skype but that’s pretty out of fashion now.

I'm pro android. Because of work, I have to deal with Apple products. What cracks me up is the phones and older iPads take the lightning charging cable, but the iPad Pro takes a Usb-C. The iPhone is what it is, and that's what users that like iPhones seem to prefer. Androids on the other hand, you can tailor make your phone to your style, by doing simple things like custom notifications, or more complex rooting.

I think the thing I like the most is that my phone isn't tied to iTunes if I put it anywhere near a computer.

It started at iPhone 3 for me, then iPhone 4, then iPhone 6+, now iPhone XR. Some where in between I tried Samsung, hated it and had to go back to iPhones. I'm not an iPhone fan boy but I cannot see Android in my future. Never had an iPad or any other tablet for that matter. Old man vision needs 15.6" laptops.

I grew up with Apple products, starting from the old grey original Macintosh, then the abortive Power Mac, then berry-colored iMac, then a couple Apple laptops (that admittedly lasted forever...6-7+ years each) after the terrible Dell laptops they gave us in college. I'm now on a Chromebook, though I do still have a desktop Mac Mini that's hung on for over a decade (it's finally approaching end of life though). Over time, I've grown tired of the insular nature of Apple products and the Apple ecosystem, not to mention their massively inflated prices. At this point, I'm 100% in on the Google ecosystem instead (Chromebook, Pixel phone, GMail & Google Drive, Android Auto, etc.), and while it's really little different from Apple's ecosystem, I don't feel so stiflingly trapped.

I hate...loathe...despise... the iPhone. I've hated them from the very beginning, and still do. No flexibility to adjust how it functions -- customization options are minimal, you either operate it exactly as Apple designed it, or you live with it. Apple is (always has been) about simplicity for the user. Which is great, if the user is incompetent and not tech savvy at all. But if you know what you're doing, it feels infuriatingly condescending. A stupid thing that hung around for WAY too long was the ability to only run a single app at once, and iPhone would shut down an app the moment you went back to home screen or another app. Ludicrous. I will grant that the last couple iterations of iPhone have started to be less restrictive, and frankly taking a variety of Android features and occasionally improving some of them. I borrowed a friend's iPhone recently for a minute, and didn't even realize it was an iPhone at first, until I started trying to type a message on it -- does the iPhone still not have swipe text input yet?!? Insane. But yeah, the iMessage debacle is maddening, iCloud's interface and portability sucks, FaceTime is annoying, ...... ugh... I could continue to rant, it's just frustrating.

And yes, iPhone people are often just as annoying as the iPhone itself. No direct offense intended to DS & other iPhone users... But there truly is an assumption that everyone has an iPhone, or that iPhone's features/functions automatically translate flawlessly (truth: it's terrible) to the rest of the technology world. One of the most aggravating bits: persistently getting text messages stating, "XXXXX liked '[entire quoted text message]'" every time somebody 'reacts' to a text message. Why? Because Apple (and in turn everyone else) refuses to cooperate together on building/adopting an interoperable RCS text messaging format. Kills me. Yes, all the major companies are part of the problem, but again, at root it's because Apple refuses to accept using anything designed by another company -- it's either "Use our system, or screw off."

I'll quit... but believe me, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I use my phone to call people and talk to them. It works great regardless of device manufacturer.
                            More people should try it.

Ha. I almost never make phone calls. That's probably the function of my phone I use the least.
