Have you been impacted by COVID-19 yet?

Well it was only a matter of time. The first local case of COVID-19 was announced today. The patient isn't in one of our hospitals but is in the other local hospital in my town. We got an email at work yesterday essentially banning all employees from any non-essential travel and notifying us that any travel could result in us being blocked from returning to work for 14 days after our return. And we got an email today looking for extra providers to work this weekend in the event that our urgent cares see higher volumes due to everyone with a sniffle coming in to get checked out. I signed up to work on Sunday if needed. I'm actually hoping I get called in. There haven't been many open shifts available so my per diem income has been non-existent lately.

It didn't affect me personally but I know a number of large festivals have been cancelled including in Miami and Texas. Several people have had business travel cancelled. I am scheduled to attend a medical conference next month. I'm waiting to see if that still happens but a lot can change in 6 weeks so time will tell.

Yes, booked a cruise for Alaska leaving from Seattle. NCL just gave us the permission to cancel for 100% store credit.

My son is scheduled for a spring break cruise with friends in two weeks. I’ve been strongly suggesting he skip. If that doesn’t work, I’ll go nuclear option next week and tell him he’s not going.

I am not worried about CV per se, but the hysteria surrounding it. If just one person on that boat shows symptoms, they could be quarantined in the gulf for weeks, while his spring semester goes down the toilet. No thanks.

My daughter will be flying home via Seattle Airport so hopefully all will be well. My DH's industry has been affected - transportation and ship unloading. Their terminal services ships from China. He was off for about 10 days, back to work for a few and then off again. No impact to us financially because we plan. He is actually happy to be able to have the time to work on the car, boat, house, etc........................

While everyone seems bearish about the whole deal, I think the CV threat has caused a bull market in places:

- groceries are doing well
- cereal, canned goods, household cleaners, etc., are doing exceptionally well.
- charter flight reservations are booming
- my vacation rental co is having a record spring - instead of flying or cruising, people are driving and staying at a private residence.
- with more folks staying at home, I would wonder if they don’t do more yard work and home improvements. Lowe’s and Home Depot anyone?

Yeah, I wouldn't cruise right now. Although the lines are being really strict about who they let onto the ships at this point there's always the chance of someone slipping through the cracks. That's especially true now that there is a growing number of cases in the US. Having them just examine your passport for recent travel history won't catch the folks who may have been infected without ever leaving the country. The last place you want to be is on a quarantined ship.

I'm glad I don't have any flights planned. Twice a month I would catch Indian casino free buses from Los Angeles to San Diego but won't be anytime soon. I will drive myself instead. With MLB season starting I would go to Angels or Dodgers games but not with COV-19, don't want to be around too many people. I plan to hibernate and watch games on TV at home instead. I do have a Las Vegas trip planned for mid-March but I'm driving. I might cancel it though because casinos can be breeding grounds for viruses/bacteria with constantly touching buttons, money-handling, etc. I go to the beach as well on my days off from work so that won't change. I'm guessing the beach is one of the safest places from COV-19 so I'll be spending more time there.

We actually have. We have 28 properties that we manage, and all but one are booked this weekend. We have seen a flood of March reservations in the last two or three days.

The last place you want to be is on a quarantined ship.

I told my son that and he retorted “ok so I’m stuck in a cruise ship two more weeks - not too bad!”

I told him “why don’t you go down to the Stillwater Oklahoma jail and ask them if you can stay a night or two to get a feel for it...”.

Sure, 2 weeks stuck on a cruise ship with a growing number of people infected with a virus for which we have no treatment. And then after you get off the ship, probably another 2 weeks of quarantine at home before you can rejoin the world. Sounds like an awesome vacation.
