Is the Post Office Open on Saturday and Sunday?

People have a pretty standard idea about how the United States Postal Service (USPS) operates on weekdays. However, is the post office open on the weekends? If so, what are the post office hours on Saturday and Sunday? If you have a package to send, and you can’t get to the post office during the week, then what options are available to you? Here are the answers to all of those questions.

Is The Post Office Open on Weekends?

Your local post office is open Mondays – Fridays. In other words, there’s no doubt that you can head to your local post office to mail something or check your PO Box on a weekday (unless it happens to be a holiday.) However, the weekends are different.

Some post office locations aren’t open at all on the weekends. Other locations are open on Saturdays, but not on Sundays. For those locations that are open on Saturdays, the post office hours usually differ from their workday hours. Furthermore, there are some exceptions to the usual weekend hours including during Christmas season and at post office locations inside of other retail stores.

Some Post Offices Are Open Saturdays

Post office hours differ from location to location. This is particularly true when it comes to Saturday hours. Some locations aren’t open at all. Many are open with limited hours, closing earlier on Saturdays than on weekdays. A handful of others may be open regular hours on Saturdays. There’s no clear answer that applies across the board. Therefore, if you want to find out if your post office location has Saturday hours, then you’ll need to check directly with them.

You can use the online USPS locator to find out hours of the post office locations near you. When I searched within one mile of my personal zip code, I found three locations with the following hours:

  • M-F: 9 – 5, Sat: 9 – 4, Sun: closed
  • M-F: 8 – 6, Sat: 8 – 3, Sun: closed
  • M-F: 1 pm – 3 pm and 3:15 pm – 5 pm, Sat and Sun: closed

Put another way, I found that all three locations closest to me were closed on Sundays. Two were open on Saturdays, closing one hour and three hours earlier than weekdays respectively.

In contrast, I checked within 5 miles of where my parents live and found that of the seven available locations, only one was open on Saturdays. Obviously, the USPS budget and post office hours vary widely from place to place.

The Post Office is Closed on Sundays

Almost all post office locations are closed on Sundays. The main reason is to reduce operating costs. In other words, the USPS saves money by closing all locations one day per week. However, there are two key exceptions that allow some Sunday post office hours:

  • Some locations have Sunday post office hours on the two Sundays before Christmas Day each year. Due to the increase in mail processing during the holidays, some locations opt to open on these two Sundays.
  • There are post offices location inside of various retail stores. In some instances, these are 7-day-per-week post offices. Therefore, you may be able to find Sunday post office hours at such locations.

Post Office Closed for Holidays

The post office observes a federal holiday schedule. Therefore, they’ll be closed the following days in 2021:

  • New Years Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • President’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day (they will close on Monday, July 5th in observance, since they are already closed on Sunday, July 4)
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day (Christmas is on a Saturday; many post office locations will also close Christmas Ev in observance of the holiday, especially those that don’t keep regular Saturday post hours.)

Does The Post Office Deliver Mail on The Weekends?

You might already know the answer to this question if you check your mail regularly. The United States Postal Service delivers mail six days per week. Therefore, you do receive mail in your mailbox on Saturdays. However, the post office does not deliver mail on Sundays.

If you were hoping to mail some items or receive packages on January 1, you might be wondering whether the post office will open on New Year’s Day. If you fall into that category, here’s what you need to know.

Is the Post Office Open on New Year’s Day?

No, the post office is not open on New Year’s Day. The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a federal agency, so it follows the federal holiday schedule. As a result, no post office workers will be available, and mail deliveries will not run.

However, certain services may be available. If you have a post office box in an unsecured part of the building, you can access it even on holidays. Similarly, if there are self-service kiosks, those may still be accessible and operational on New Year’s Day.

It’s only services that require USPS personnel that won’t be available. For example, you won’t be able to bring in a missed delivery slip and retrieve a package. Along the same line, if you get postage through the kiosk and what you want to mail won’t fit into an available outgoing mail slot, you won’t be able to get it officially in the hands of USPS until the next business day, which is Saturday, January 2, 2021.

Yes, the post office is open on New Year’s Eve. December 31 is not a federal holiday, and, in 2021, it falls on a weekday, so USPS doesn’t close.

Post Office Holiday Schedule 2021

The post office follows the federal holiday schedule. Here’s a look at the holiday closure calendar for 2020:

  • New Year’s Day – Friday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, January 18: The post office is closed
  • Washington’s Birthday (Presidents Day) – Monday, February 15: The post office is closed
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 31: The post office is closed
  • Independence Day (Observed) – Monday, July 5: The post office is closed
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 6: The post office is closed
  • Columbus Day – Monday, October 11: The post office is closed
  • Veterans Day – Thursday, November 11: The post office is closed
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 25: The post office is closed
  • Christmas Day – Saturday, December 25: The post office is closed

Since July 4 falls on a Sunday in 2021, the federal government is observing the Independence Day holiday on Monday, July 5. This means there will be no USPS services for customers or deliveries that day.

Post Office Normal Hours

Aside from holidays, post office locations follow a regular operating schedule. While the exact opening and closing times may vary from one USPS post office to the next, the majority use similar hours.

Monday through Friday, a post office usually opens at 8:00 or 8:30 am and closes at 5:00 or 6:00 pm. However, some may open as early as 7:30 am or close as late as 9:00 pm.

Certain post offices are also open on Saturdays, but not all locations open their doors. For those that open, the hours are typically shorter than their Monday through Friday schedules.

If you want to see exactly when your local post office is open, checking the USPS website is usually the best move. That way, you can see your location’s schedule and plan your trip accordingly.

Is UPS Open on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day?

UPS is not open on New Year’s Day. All services except UPS Express Critical are not available on January 1.

However, UPS maintains its usual operating hours on New Year’s Eve. That means, on December 31, 2020, all typical services are available to customers.

Is FedEx Open on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day?

FedEx is not open on New Year’s Day. The only service that remains operational on holidays is FedEx Custom Critical. Otherwise, all other services are not available on January 1.

On New Year’s Eve, many FedEx services run on modified schedules. Some locations may have early drop box pickups, and FedEx Office locations will close no later than 6:00 pm local time. For FedEx Freight, only prearranged pickups and deliveries are made. However, other services – including FedEx Home Delivery, FedEx SmartPost, and FedEx Ground, will follow their usual operating hours on New Year’s Eve.

The only exceptions include FedEx Custom Critical and UPS Express Critical. Those services remain operational all year-round, including on holidays.

Although many of you will have a three-day weekend, that isn’t the case for USPS workers. Mail will still run on Saturday and, depending on your local P.O.’s regular hours, they will be open on Saturday, Oct. 10 as well. So, if your post office is usually open, it will be open this Saturday and closed on Sunday, as usual.

Keep in mind, there are three more federal holidays in which the post office will be closed this year. These holidays will also impact the post office’s regular schedule:

  • Veterans’ Day: Wednesday, November 11, 2020
  • Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 26, 2020
  • Christmas Day: Friday, December 25, 2020

Since it’s a holiday, many businesses close, giving workers a day off to enjoy the warmer weather and spend the day doing fun activities, like throwing a celebratory barbecue. However, since not everything closes for Memorial Day, many people aren’t sure what will or won’t be open. If you are wondering whether you can head to the post office on Memorial Day, here’s what you need to know.

Is the Post Office Open on Memorial Day?

No, the post office isn’t open on Memorial Day. While the United States Postal Service (USPS) usually offers Monday service, they are a government agency. As a result, since Memorial Day is a federal holiday, they recognize it with a closure, giving postal workers a day off.

If you need to get an item mailed or have other tasks to handle that require help from a post office employee, you may be wondering if you can take care of it during Memorial Day weekend. Depending on where you live, there is a chance you can.

Your local post office might be open on Saturday, May 23. If your location typically offers Saturday hours, then it will follow its usual Saturday schedule. But, if your post office closes on Saturday, then it won’t be open on May 23.

Post offices don’t generally open on Sundays, regardless of whether there is a Monday holiday. Sunday, May 24, 2020, will be no different.

It’s important to note that mail service will run on Saturday. You’ll still get your deliveries, even though it’s Memorial Day weekend, and your outgoing mail will still be picked up. Not long ago, the post office was completely closed on Sundays. Now, that isn’t the case. Thanks to a deal with Amazon, many United States Postal Service (USPS) locations deliver Amazon packages on Sundays. For many, this leads to a degree of confusion. If USPS is hitting the road on Sundays for deliveries, does that mean the post office is open on Easter? What about on other Sundays? If you aren’t sure whether USPS is operating on Easter, here’s what you need to know.

Is the Post Office Open on Easter?

No, the post office isn’t open on Easter. In fact, USPS locations usually aren’t open to customers on any Sunday, even if they support Sunday deliveries. While you can get to unlocked, self-service areas within a post office building, you can’t get help from an employee on Sundays.

But, since self-service options may be available, you can still get some mail moving on Easter Sunday. You might be able to get postage from machines, for example. Then, you can place outgoing items in the appropriate drop boxes. While they won’t get sorted until Monday, it still lets you complete an important step.

If you need assistance from an employee, you’ll need to head to the post office on another day. Here’s a look at how the post office operates near the Easter holiday:

  • Good Friday, April 10 – Post offices follow regular business hours
  • Easter Saturday, April 11 – Post offices with Saturday hours will follow their usual schedule
  • Easter Monday, April 13 – Post offices follow regular business hours

Will There Be Easter Sunday Deliveries?

For regular mail, don’t expect to see any delivered on Easter. Even in areas with Sunday delivery, that only applies to specific packages and not regular mail.

If you’re wondering whether you might see a USPS package delivery on Easter Sunday, the answer is a resounding maybe. Easter isn’t technically a federal holiday. Since most government agencies shut down on holidays, making Easter an official holiday wouldn’t usually be necessary. Most people would have the day off anyway.

However, since USPS offers Sunday deliveries, it’s possible you could get a package on Easter. This is, albeit, a bit rare. Usually, you have to be in an area with a lot of parcel traffic for this to possibly occur. Many people aren’t in a zone where that would be the case. While it can happen, it’s best not to count on it. If you need something by Easter, order with enough time for it to arrive before Sunday.

Are FedEx or UPS Open on Easter?

By and large, no, neither FedEx nor UPS are open on Easter. UPS usually doesn’t operate on Sundays, aside from specialty services like UPS Express Critical (which is available on Easter).

As for FedEx, the company did start offering residential delivery every day of the week, beginning in January 2020, including no additional costs for Sunday deliveries. However, the company does recognize the Easter holiday, and only offers FedEx Custom Critical deliveries and FedEx Trade Networks services on Easter, as a result.
