Is the Post Office Open Today?
There’s nothing worse than pulling up to a business and finding out that they are closed. When it comes to the post office the days they are open and closed can get a little fuzzy but if you’re asking yourself, “is the post office open today?” The answer is most likely yes but you’ll want to check the federal holiday and post office holiday schedules before you do.
When is the Post Office Closed?
On days when the federal government isn’t doing business, neither is the post office. The U.S. Postal Service follows the same holiday schedule as federal offices. In 2017 the only days the United States Postal Service will not be open is January 2 and 16, February 20, May 29, July 4, September 4, October 9, November 11 and 23, and December 25.
Normally the post office would be open on January 2 but because New Year’s Day (January 1) lands on a Sunday P.O. workers get the following day off. Please keep in mind that occasionally, particularly near holidays, your local post office may be open, but may close earlier than usual.
Is the post office open on Sunday?
No, the post office isn’t open on Sundays. A lot of businesses close on Sunday and the post office is one of them. You won’t be able to speak with a USPS employee on a Sunday, however, you’ll still be able to perform a lot of basic postal tasks (like buying stamps, sending off mail and even printing labels). This area is usually in the lobby where the post office boxes are located. The services available will depend on your local post office. While you won’t be able to get anything weighed or packaged for you, if you simply need to get an item into the mail you’ll probably be able to do so on Sundays. Is Mail Delivered on Sunday?
No, mail isn’t delivered on Sunday. The post office doesn’t deliver mail on Sunday.
Why Isn’t The Post Office Open on Sunday?
The main reason for the post office being closed on Sunday is cost savings. It’s the same reason that the post office currently wants to stop Saturday delivery and has cut the hours of many post offices in rural areas. It simply costs too much to keep post offices open on Sunday.
Post Offices Open on Sunday
There are a few exceptions to post offices being closed on Sunday. For instance, some post offices are open the Sunday before Christmas (to allow more time for presents to arrive). Because there is so much more mail going out around that time some locations remain open extra hours. You will want to contact your local post office to see if they offer the same extended hours.
Another way your post office may be open on a Sunday is if it is located within a retail store. Some post office locations are inside stores like Staples. If this is the case, the post office in the store may be open seven days a week. If you have a post office in a retail outlet nearby you can give them a call to see if their postal services are available on Sundays.
