3 Tips to Start a New Career in the Next Year

March 31, 2025 by Susan Paige

You could’ve been in your current career for years, if not decades. While it’s always possible you still enjoy it, it’s also likely you don’t enjoy it at all anymore. That could make you want to start a new career that you’ll actually like. It’s easy to see why you’ll want to make a switch.

Actually doing this can often seem overwhelmingly complicated, though. While it takes time and effort, the process itself can often be more straightforward than you’d think. A few career tips can help with this much more than you might’ve thought.

Network Like a Pro

Trying to find a new career can be complicated. Even once you’ve identified a specific career, trying to find jobs in that industry can still be hard. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be nearly as complicated as you might assume. There are more than a few steps that can help with this.

Networking can be one of the better options for this. Your current career network could lead you to opportunities you mightn’t have even thought of. They could make introductions for you when you’re on your job hunt, and this can often be a welcome benefit going forward.

Invest in New Courses

Depending on the careers you’re interested in, you could need to pursue a few courses or degrees. While you could think you’ll have to take a lot of time off work for this, that doesn’t have to be the case. Instead, investing in these courses could be easier than you’d think.

You could pursue an online MBA or similar course, for example. The trick to this is to focus on courses that’ll actually help you get your dream job. You’ll still need to put the effort into finishing the course, but it’ll be more than worth it.

Revamp Your Resumé

When you’re looking for a new career, it’s worth updating your resumè before you start applying for jobs. That’s especially true if you’ve completed any new courses. It’s worth spending a decent bit of time on this. It’ll be your introduction to potential employers, and it should offer a great impression.

It’s worth highlighting any key skills and experience that’ll make you a great fit for the jobs you’re interested in. You can adapt a lot of your previous experience to help with this, even if your new career is in a completely different industry. Make your resumè properly work for you.

You’ll have plenty of reasons to want to start a new career. That doesn’t mean you should just try anything and everything. Instead, it’s worth putting the time and effort into the right areas. That way, you shouldn’t have a problem starting a new career you’re interested in.

Some tips help with this much more than others. You’ll still have to put time and effort into it, but it shouldn’t be nearly as complicated as you could think. It’s more than worth investing in them from as early as you can and start reaping the rewards.
