Labor Day may be best known as the unofficial end of summer, but for investors, it’s also a day when U.S. financial markets take a break. In 2025, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 1, giving most workers—and the stock market itself—a long weekend. If you’re wondering whether you can place trades on the holiday, it’s important to know the schedule in advance to avoid any surprises. Here’s what you need to know about stock market hours on Labor Day 2025 and the rest of this year’s trading calendar.

Is the Stock Market Open on Labor Day?

Yes — the U.S. stock market will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 2025. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq follow the same holiday schedule and will observe the federal holiday by remaining closed for trading.

For those planning to place trades, make sure to finalize all transactions by Friday, August 29, 2025, as the market will not reopen until Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Does the Market Use Early or Holiday Hours on the Preceding Friday?

No — trading hours on the Friday before Labor Day are entirely normal. The NYSE and Nasdaq will operate with standard trading hours (9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET) on Friday, August 29, 2025, without early closure.

U.S. Stock Market Holiday Schedule — 2025

Here’s an updated calendar of U.S. equity market closures and early closings for 2025:

  • New Year’s Day—Wednesday, January 1—Closed
  • MLK Jr. Day—Monday, January 20—Closed
  • Presidents’ Day—Monday, February 17—Closed
  • Good Friday—Friday, April 18—Closed
  • Memorial Day—Monday, May 26—Closed
  • Juneteenth—Thursday, June 19—Closed
  • Day Before Independence Day—Thursday, July 3—Closes early at 1 p.m. EST
  • Independence Day—Friday, July 4—Closed
  • Labor Day—Monday, September 1—Closed
  • Thanksgiving Day—Thursday, November 27—Closed
  • Black Friday—Friday, November 28—Closes early at 1 p.m. EST
  • Christmas Eve—Wednesday, December 24—Closes early at 1 p.m. EST
  • Christmas Day—Thursday, December 25—Closed

This alignment applies equally to both NYSE and Nasdaq.

Are Cryptocurrency Markets Open On Labor Day?

Yes. Cryptocurrency markets are also open on Labor Day 2025.  Unlike stock markets, crypto markets are international and are generally based on distributed computing networks.  As a result, cryptocurrency markets are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Investors should be aware that although cryptocurrency markets are open all the time, trade execution times depend a great deal on market activity.  For example, most trading activity happens between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. local time.  Fees for trading may also be higher during times of peak activity and lower during off-hours.
