Free donuts on National Donut Day: Locations to Grab Them

June 1, 2023 by Tamila McDonald

National Donut Day

National Donut Day, one of the most fun food holidays in the country, is just around the corner. It always falls on the first Friday in June. For 2023, that means it’s happening on June 2. During National Donut Day, you can typically find free donuts through select restaurants. If you enjoy these tasty sweet treats, then planning in advance can help ensure you get your free donut. Here’s what you need to know.

The History of National Donut Day

National Donut Day began in 1938 in Chicago, when it was first used to honor the Salvation Army Lassies. The Lassies went to the frontlines during World War I and supported the American Expeditionary Force. During their time overseas, they decided to make donuts to serve to the men, using the sweet treats to help remind the soldiers of home. The donuts were a big hit.

The first National Donut Day in 1938 honored the Lassies not just for bringing joy to the military members but also for their own courage. In time, it became one of the more popular food holidays, giving everyone a reason to enjoy the delectable treat to celebrate the occasion.

How You Get Free Donuts on National Donut Day

Generally, you can get a free donut on National Donut Day by heading into a participating bakery or restaurant on June 2, 2023. Some places may simply hand out a free donut – usually limited to specific flavors – just because you showed up. Others may require some kind of purchase, such as buying a drink to get a free donut. In some cases, you might need to be a part of the loyalty program and claim a free donut through the establishment’s app.

Since the free donut deals vary, it’s critical to review the details of any National Donut Deals in advance. That way, you know whether you need to spend anything or take additional steps to get your donut.

Where to Grab Free Donuts on National Donut Day

If you’re looking for bakeries or restaurants offering free donuts on National Donut Day, starting with some of the major chains is typically best. The following establishments regularly participate in free donut day:

  • Duck Donuts
  • Dunkin’
  • Krispy Kreme
  • Lamar’s
  • Tim Horton’s

However, if you have independent bakeries or pastry shops in your area, it’s worth checking them out, too. Most establishments will advertise any National Donut Day freebies and deals on their social media pages and websites. Consider checking during the week leading up to June 2, 2023, as the majority of places will announce their specials a few days before the holiday.

Additionally, many grocers have deals on donuts around National Donut Day. You may find discounted prices on boxes or BOGO-style specials, so make sure to check flyers from grocery stores in your area to find bargains.
