Is The Post Office Open on New Year’s Eve 2022?

December 16, 2022 by Tamila McDonald

Is The Post Office Open on New Years Eve?

New Year’s Eve is a widely celebrated occasion. Many people attend parties or otherwise gather with family and friends to ring in the new year. However, running errands might also be on your agenda. As a result, you may be wondering, “Is the post office open on New Year’s Eve, 2022?” If so, here’s the information you need.

Is the Post Office Open on New Year’s Eve 2022?

Typically, the post office isn’t closed on New Year’s Eve, as it’s not a federal holiday. However, whether you can get support from an employee on New Year’s Eve may vary.

Not all post offices offer Saturday hours. As a result, if your post office doesn’t typically have customer service employees on-site on Saturdays, they won’t be there on New Year’s Eve 2022 since it falls on a Saturday this year.

If your post office does have Saturday hours, then the location is open on New Year’s Eve. You’ll be able to get help from employees at your post office just as you would on any other Saturday. Just check in advance to see if the post office is modifying its operating hours for New Year’s Eve, as some locations may do so.

However, mail service will run on New Year’s Eve regardless of whether you can get support from a customer service employee on-site, so deliveries and pickups at mailboxes will occur. Additionally, services in parts of a post office that aren’t secured – such as access to post office boxes or automated postage kiosks – will be available. Outgoing mail placed through slots in the post office on New Year’s Eve may also get processed, depending on the time it’s dropped off.

Post Office Holiday Schedule

The post office holiday generally aligns with the federal holiday schedule. As a result, it’s easy to anticipate when customer service employees aren’t available and when mail won’t get picked up or delivered.

Here are the holidays when the post office is closed each year:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • President’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

It’s critical to note that holidays that fall on Sundays are typically observed the following Monday. As a result, the post office may close on Mondays that aren’t holidays if the Sunday before it is a holiday.

Do you think that the post office should be open or closed on New Year’s Eve? Have you ever been impacted by a post office holiday closure and want to help others avoid similar situations? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
