Is the Post Office Closed on Christmas Eve 2022

December 5, 2022 by Melissa Batai

Is the Post Office Closed on Christmas Eve?

Christmas is one of the few remaining holidays where many businesses, including the post office, close. Beyond Christmas, the post office closes for federal holidays, meaning it’s closed for an additional 10 days of the year. How does this closure affect the day before Christmas? If you have urgent business, you may wonder, is the post office closed on Christmas Eve?

For What Holidays Does the Post Office Close?

The post office is closed for the following federal holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King’s Birthday
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

This year, Christmas Day falls on Sunday, when the post office is usually closed. Therefore, in recognition of the Christmas holiday, the post office will be closed on Monday, December 26th.

Is the Post Office Closed on Christmas Eve?

The post office is not closed on Christmas Eve. They will be open; however, since Christmas Eve is on a Saturday, they will likely only be open half the day. You should check with your local post office as they may have limited hours on that particular day.

If you plan to drop off your mail at the blue boxes, be advised that most will make their last pick-up earlier than usual. Therefore, the latest you should drop your mail in the box if you would like same-day pick up is by noon.

Is the Post Office Closed on Christmas Eve?

In addition, the post office will have the usual mail delivery to people’s homes on Christmas Eve.

If you have business to do at the post office, you should conduct that business on Christmas Eve because the post office will be closed on Monday, December 26th.

The Post Office’s New Year’s Hours

The post office will be open on New Year’s Eve, as it is open on Christmas Eve. Like Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve falls on a Saturday, so the same hours will apply for that day as they did for Christmas Eve. Likewise, New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, so in recognition of the holiday, the post office will be closed on Monday, January 2nd.

If you have essential mail you need to send out, remember that during the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, the post office will only open four full business days and a half day on New Year’s Eve Day.

Final Thoughts

As we enter the last month of the year filled with holidays, keeping track of what businesses are open or closed on what days can be challenging. If you want to know is the post office closed on Christmas Eve, the answer is no, but locations may have shorter hours. Check with your local post office so you don’t drive there only to find the office closed. Luckily, at-home mail delivery is unaffected on Christmas Eve.
