Are Banks Open on Christmas Eve 2021?

December 9, 2021 by Tamila McDonald

are banks closed on Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is often viewed as a time to spend with family and friends. However, since many businesses are closed on Christmas Day, December 24 can also be a critical day for errands. But whether you’ll be able to accomplish what you’d like to do this Christmas Eve isn’t as easy to predict as it is in other years. Mainly, that’s because Christmas Day falls on a Saturday. As a result, the federal holiday shifts to Friday, December 24. If you’re wondering if banks are open on Christmas Eve 2021, here’s what you need to know.

Are Banks Open Christmas Eve 2021?

In most years, banks are open on Christmas Eve. However, 2021 is a bit different, so banks may or may not be open on December 24 this year.

What’s different about the situation is that Christmas Day falls on a Saturday. As a result, the federal holiday is being observed on Friday, December 24. However, the Federal Reserve holiday calendar lists December 25 as the day for the holiday instead, as banks often operate on Saturdays.

As a result, some banks may welcome customers on Christmas Eve while others might not. Whether your bank is open or closed on Christmas Eve may depend on whether it traditionally offers Saturday hours, as those that do may be more inclined to provide at least limited hours on December 24.

However, even the usual presence of Saturday operating hours isn’t a universal determiner. As a result, you’ll want to check your bank’s schedule to see whether they’ll be opening on Christmas Eve.

Banks Opening on Christmas Eve 2021:

As mentioned above, some banks will be open on Christmas Eve, including:

  • Bank of America
  • Bank of the West
  • Capital One
  • Chase
  • Citibank
  • Fifth Third Bank
  • HSBC
  • KeyBank
  • PNC
  • TD Bank
  • S. Bank
  • Wells Fargo

It’s important to note that the list above isn’t all-inclusive. Additionally, there could be exceptions with the list above, such as individual branches in low-traffic locations or those positioned in retail stores. Ultimately, if you may need to go to the bank on December 24, it’s always best to check with your preferred branch to confirm it is opening in advance.

Will Banks Be Open All Day on Christmas Eve 2021?

Just as whether a bank is open or closed on Christmas Eve may vary in 2021, so will the use of reduced holiday hours. For example, many banks that open on December 24 may choose to close their doors at noon instead of following their typical schedule. However, that isn’t universally true.

Again, this is a time where you may need to check with your preferred branch in advance. That way, you can find out if it is closing early because of the upcoming holiday.

Are Credit Unions Open on Christmas Eve 2021?

Like banks, credit unions may or may not be open on Christmas Eve. They may choose to follow the federal holiday calendar and observe Christmas Day on December 24, or they may opt to align their operations with the Federal Reserve calendar instead.

If you’re hoping to head to your credit union near Christmas, you’ll want to check in advance to confirm if it will be open on December 24. That way, you can adjust your plans if your branch isn’t open.
