Veteran’s Day is around the corner. It’s a day for the nation to honor and recognize the people who have served our country. Additionally, for many people, it’s a day off of work. Therefore, you might have in mind that you want to run some errands on Veteran’s Day. And with the holidays coming up and shipping waits longer than usual, you might want to go to the post office to get out some holiday mail. However, is that an option? Is the post office closed on Veterans Day 2021?

What Is Veteran’s Day?

The U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs explains that Veteran’s Day originally began to honor the soldiers of WWI. At the time it was known as “The Great War.” The war ended officially in June 1919. However, it more or less ended a bit earlier, on November 11, 1918. At that time, the fighting nations agreed to an armistice. Therefore, on November 11th of the following year, 1919, the president named the day Armistice Day. Originally, it honored those who fought in WWI.

It became an official federal holiday in the 1930’s, still known as Armistice Day. In the 1950’s, however, things shifted. World War II came about and those veterans deserved honor as well. Armistice Day officially became Veteran’s Day. This holiday honors all veterans and veteran’s organizations. It’s a day to recognize what they have done to serve America. Moreover, it’s a day to celebrate peace.

When Is Veteran’s Day?

Veteran’s Day is on November 11th every year. The date never changes. Therefore, it’s on a different day of the week each year, depending on the calendar.

Fun fact: The U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs explains that Armistice Day actually went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Therefore, the official Veteran’s Day date is November 11th at 11.

Further fun fact: They also note that there was a brief time in the 1970’s when the government tried to change several holidays to a “Monday off” rule. This would allow for three-day weekends. So, under this rule, Veteran’s Day would be honored on the closest Monday to November 11th. However, there was pushback and this didn’t act long. Therefore, it’s always recognized on November 11th, regardless of the day of week.

Since the holiday’s days of the week change, sometimes you have to ask “is the post office closed on Veterans Day?” For example, this year it falls on a Thursday. Since the post office is usually open on Thursdays, it’s reasonable to ask is the post office closed in honor of the holiday.

In contrast, if November 11th is a Sunday, then you probably won’t ask this question. After all, the post office isn’t ever open on Sundays. Therefore, it would be a non-issue.

Is The Post Office Closed on Veteran’s Day?

Since we know that Veteran’s Day falls on a Thursday this year, then we do have to ask, “is the post office closed on Veterans Day?”

The post office honors all federal holidays. Therefore, if it’s a federal holiday, they close down for the day. Veteran’s Day is indeed a federal holiday. Therefore, yes, the post office is closed on Veterans Day 2021.

Is There Mail Delivery on Veteran’s Day?

In addition to closing their business locations, the USPS also gives the day off to mail carriers. Therefore, you will not receive mail delivery on Veteran’s Day.

When Will The Post Office Open After Veteran’s Day?

Many people are concerned about getting to the post office early this year with their holiday packages and cards. We’re hearing a lot about how wait and delivery times are going to be longer than usual this year. Therefore, it makes sense that you would like to get this task out of the way as soon as possible. If you have Veteran’s Day off of work, then you might have hoped that you could get your mail out then. Obviously, you can’t, since the post office closes for the holiday.

However, the post office re-opens the following day with normal hours. So, if you happen to also be off of work on Friday, November 12th, then you can go ahead and get to the post office then. If your post office has any weekend hours, they’ll be open normal hours on the weekend follow Veteran’s Day as well.

Mail delivery resumes as normal on Friday, November 12, 2021.

Post Office Holiday Schedule for the Remainder of 2021

Of course, you might not be able to get everything mailed out on the day after Veteran’s Day. Or perhaps you don’t want to go that day at all. After all, the day after a post office holiday closure, it’s often really busy at the post office. So, when can you get your mail out?

The earlier the better is the rule of thumb this year. If you want items to arrive before Christmas, for example, then you want to start shipping soon. This is particularly important if you’re shopping overseas, which naturally takes longer anyway.

There are a few more holiday post office closures to know about before the end of the year:

Thanksgiving, which is November 25, 2021
Christmas, which is December 25, 2021. Note that Christmas falls on a Saturday. Therefore, some stores might have limited hours on Friday, December 24, 2021 in recognition of the holiday. However, mail delivery is normal on Friday, December 24, 2021.
New Year’s Eve, possibly. Post offices close for New Year’s Day. However, like with Christmas, that holiday is on a Saturday this year. Therefore, some locations may close or close early on New Year’s Eve. Check your local post office for information.
