Is Giant Eagle Open on Labor Day?

September 2, 2020 by Tamila McDonald

Is Giant Eagle open on labor day

In 2020, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7. It’s a formal federal holiday, causing most government offices to be closed. However, retailers and grocers don’t have to follow that schedule. They can choose to open their doors if they wish, though they can also shut down for the holiday. As a result, there’s a bit of confusion surrounding what is and isn’t open on Labor Day. If you were hoping to head to Giant Eagle on Monday, September 7, here’s what you need to know.

Is Giant Eagle Open on Labor Day?

Yes, Giant Eagle is open on Labor Day in 2020. Stores will follow their typical Monday operating schedule.

Does Giant Eagle Have a Labor Day Sale?

Giant Eagle technically has a sale every week of the year. Like most grocery stores, it uses discounts to entice shoppers into choosing them, changing them frequently to align with the season and manufacturers’ wishes.

There will be weekly specials available on Labor Day weekend. Those will be in the circular that is valid from September 3 through September 9.

Giant Eagle Holidays 2020

Giant Eagles stores usually don’t close for holidays. In fact, they traditionally only shut their doors for a handful. Here’s an overview of the Giant Eagle 2020 holiday closure schedule:

  • Easter Sunday – Sunday, April 12
  • Christmas Day – Friday, December 25

Shoppers do need to understand that Giant Eagle hasn’t always closed on Easter Sundays, though did in 2020. Whether that trend will continue isn’t clear.

Generally, Giant Eagle stores are open on every other holiday, including:

  • New Year’s Day (reduced hours)
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veteran’s Day
  • Thanksgiving Day (reduced hours)
  • Christmas Eve (reduced hours)

On days with reduced hours, stores may open late or close early. Precisely when can vary from one store to the next, so you want to check with your preferred Giant Eagle store to confirm when they are open.

Normal Giant Eagle Business Hours

Many Giant Eagle stores are open 24/7, aside from a few holidays. For those that aren’t, typical operating hours are 6:00 am to 11:00 pm, Monday through Saturday, and 6:00 am to 9:00 pm on Sunday.

However, certain departments may have limited hours, even in 24-hour stores. Here’s an overview of the average operating schedules for different services:

  • Bakery – 6:00 am to 9:00 pm, Monday through Sunday
  • Deli – 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, Monday through Sunday
  • Meat – 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Friday through Sunday
  • Pharmacy – 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Sunday

It’s important to note that these are just averages. Different stores may have slightly different schedules, so it’s best to check with your location if you need assistance in these departments when you’re shopping.

Covid-19 Impact

Additionally, shoppers need to be aware that COVID-19 may impact some Giant Eagle store schedules. For example, some may have special shopping hours for vulnerable customers, during which times other shoppers aren’t allowed inside. Additionally, some locations – even stores that are typically 24-hour– might shut their doors for extra cleaning or similar steps, should the need arise.

If you need to shop early or late, you may want to check with your closest Giant Eagle to confirm they will be open. That way, you don’t get there only to discover they aren’t open, accidentally wasting a trip.
