Tons of retailers offer discounts to veterans of the armed forces.

Many of these are also available to families of service members, which can result in substantial savings. The retailers are in just about every category imaginable, making it possible for savings on just about any kind of purchase.

For instance, a growing number of apparel retailers provide discounts to veterans. Typically, military members can receive 10 to 20 percent off of their eligible purchases.

Here are just a few of the retailers that provide discounts to veterans:

  • American Eagle Outfitters
  • Banana Republic
  • Columbia Sportswear
  • Eddie Bauer
  • Foot Locker
  • Gap
  • Kohl’s
  • Nike
  • Old Navy
  • Payless Shoes

Cell Phone Service

All of the major post-paid wireless service companies offer some level of discount to veterans. Typically, you can get a reduction in your monthly bill and may be able to purchase accessories at lower prices too.

The amount of the discount varies, and the carriers can change their policies at their discretion. However, most military families can get a discount of at least 10 percent off their monthly bill, if not more.

Electronics

For technology shoppers, there are also discounts to be had. The Apple Store has a discount program for military members and government employees, and so does Microsoft.

Some Best Buy stores offer discounts to veterans on retail offerings and Geek Squad services. Dell provides military members with an exclusive coupon.

Home Improvement

Military veterans can also score discounts at popular home improvement stores. Two of the most recognized programs are available through Lowe’s and Home Depot, which have locations nationwide.

Sherwin Williams, the paint and stain giant, also provides a discount to service members, though the amount may vary by location.

Other Discounts

Ultimately, you may find discounts at a range of retailers, though not every store openly advertises their programs.

If you want to find out if a store provides discounts to veterans, simply ask. If they do, most cashier or customer service employees will be happy to fill you in on the program.

You can also check popular entertainment and dining establishments. Restaurants, movie theaters, and a variety of other destinations may offer discounts. The same goes for zoos, museums, and theme parks.

Eligibility Requirements for Discounts to Veterans

Each store has its own eligibility requirements. However, the most common form of verification you’ll need to provide is a valid military ID. This means you’ll need to bring your military ID with you when you shop, which isn’t an issue for most veterans.
