A widely observed holiday is just around the corner and it has many people confused as to what will be open and what will be closed. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14 and, although it is observed by many, there are some places that will be open and others that will be closed. With the day to celebrate your mom just around the corner, people are beginning to wonder if places like banks, credit unions, post offices and even the stock market will be affected by the holiday.

Because Mother’s Day is not celebrated on the same day each year, it makes things a little more difficult. It is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, which means the physical date will change each year. Mother’s Day is a holiday that is observed by many, but it’s not an official federal holiday. Since it’s not an official federal holiday, most government entities will keep their regular business hours. However, it is on a Sunday when most federal businesses would have normally been closed anyway.

Are Banks Open on Mother’s Day?

Most banks will be closed. If a holiday, like Mother’s Day, is not a federal holiday, then most banks will keep their normal business hours. Because Mother’s Day is on a Sunday each year, most banks won’t be open just as they are usually not open on regular Sundays. The two exceptions to this “rule” are TD Bank and Citizens Bank (grocery store branches). These two banks have branches open on most Sundays (unless it is a federal holiday). Some grocery store branches, like TD bank, will be open on Sunday, May 14.

Are Credit Unions Open on Mother’s Day?

Most credit unions will be closed. Just like banks, if a holiday isn’t a federal holiday, credit unions will be open. However, Mother’s Day is on a Sunday. This means that they will be closed because most credit unions are not open on Sunday. If your credit union is usually open on Sunday, you may want to give your branch a call and see if they will be open this Sunday.

While bank and credit union branches won’t be open, ATMs will work. ATMs will allow customers to do basic financial transactions on Mother’s Day if they need to. Along the same lines, your bank or credit union’s website can be used to do many different financial transactions even on days they are closed for a holiday.

Are Post Offices Open on Mother’s Day?

If you are wondering, “are banks open on Mother’s Day” you may also be wondering about the United States Postal Service and its post offices. Most post offices will be closed on Mother’s Day because it’s on a Sunday. Again, they’re not closing because of the holiday, but because they are normally closed on all Sundays. If you have a post office that happens to be open on Sundays, you should contact it to verify that it will also be open on Mother’s Day.

Because Mother’s Day lands on a Sunday each year and it is not considered a federal holiday, most businesses will continue on as usual. However, if the business is usually open on Sundays, you may want to call ahead of time to double check that they will be open on Mother’s Day.
