Where Does Costco Chicken Come From?

February 27, 2017 by Amanda Blankenship

Costco Chicken
Costco can be addicting. You get great deals, quality produce and meats. What is even more addictive than shopping at the wholesale retailer, according to many customers, is Costco chicken. So, what is so special about it? Where does Costco chicken come from?

Costco Rotisserie Chicken

Many Costco customers are huge fans of Costco’s rotisserie chicken. The whole chicken is only $4.99 and many people say it is completely addictive! Customers can’t get enough. Costco rotisserie chicken even has its own Facebook page.

To top it off, the chicken offered in the deli/bakery area is healthy for you as well, but it isn’t the only Costco chicken product the company offers.

Other Costco Chicken Products

Costco also offers a number of other chicken products, both fresh and frozen. The company offers chicken breasts, whole chickens, chicken thighs and other cuts of Costco chicken in the cooler/freezer section of the store. Where does it come from though?

Where Does Costco Chicken Come From?

You’ve probably read rumors surrounding the Costco chicken plant. While a portion of their chicken will come from this plant, not all Costco chicken will come from the Nebraska chicken plant. In fact, two thirds of it will still be shipped in from other chicken companies. However, a majority of its Kirkland Signature chicken (that famed rotisserie chicken) will be coming from the Costco chicken plant.

Costco Chicken Plants

The Costco chicken plant has not yet gotten started but the plans are in the works. Costco officials have gotten the approval of the Fremont, Nebraska city council to start building the chicken plant. Once the plant is built and begins its regular activities one third of Costco chicken will come from the Nebraska plant.

Earlier this year, once the plan got approved, Costco asked for a bump in funding for the Costco chicken plant. The initial funding was slated to be $180 million, however, Costco has bumped the funding for the chicken plant up to $275 million.

Fremont, Nebraska will serve as a location for Costco to do its own chicken processing, essentially cutting cost of Costco chicken altogether. The wholesale retailer has been putting together a network of chicken producers, giving local farmers a great deal of work. The Costco chicken plant itself will lead to 1,000 jobs in the area.

Currently Lincoln Premium Poultry is working with Costco to get the plant up and running. Both companies hope to get operations going in 2017, which will likely mean a small price cut in Costco chicken in the future. Since a portion of their chicken production will no longer be outsourced, it will make it cheaper for customers. So, next time you ask yourself “where does Costco chicken come from” it may be shipping out from Fremont, Nebraska.
