Polar was cofounded by Jeff Cole and Luke Wroblewski. Luke had been successful in previously selling another company he had co-founded, Bagcheck, which was acquired by Twitter. Polar allowed users to participate in and create polls. Some reported numbers boast over one billion polls had been taken in a period of 8 months, and further estimates that it has 1.1 million active voters as of September.
Wroblewski had posted on his site, “If you voted on a Polar poll, downloaded our app, our embedded us in your site, we learned from you. Personally, I learned more than I could imagine from the Polar team, our partners, and investors. I can’t imagine a better gift than knowledge, so I’m grateful to all of you.”
It’s clear that despite the hundreds of predictions that Google+ will crash and burn, Google seems to disagree. How much the acquisition set Google back is still unknown, but it is painfully obvious that they firmly believe it’s still something worth the investment.
The Polar team will be joining Google+ in what some might speculate is a talent grab. In the meantime, the Polar service will operate as normal until the end of 2014. You’ll be able to download an archive of your existing polls before it all goes away, so don’t worry. They’ve taken all that into account as they begin gearing towards shutting down the service for good.
As things tend to move quickly in Silicon Valley, I’m sure we can expect to see some changes happening to Google+ in the very near future.
