Michelle Phan’s Career
Michelle Phan was born on April 11, 1987 in Boston, Massachusetts. Phan and her family moved to Tampa, Florida during her adolescence and it is where the young makeup artist attended high school and college. She attended Ringling College of Art and Design and even received an Honorary Doctorate degree from the institution in 2014.
Prior to her graduating college and receiving her honorary doctorate though, Phan was much like other girls who likes to do their makeup but in 2005 she decided to videotape herself doing so. At the time Phan had a personal blog where she chatted about different makeup tutorials available on the web. She also took requests for further instruction on some makeup techniques. Soon, however, she began vlogging, which was her claim to fame.
What made Phan’s videos so unique is that she decided to model her vlog channel after painter Bob Ross’ tutorials and people were drawn to them. She went viral when a popular news outlet Buzzed shared two of her tutorials in one of their postings. The videos “How to Get Lady Gaga’s Eyes” went viral and earned Phan over one million subscribers on her YouTube channel. By 2012 Phan became a YouTube advertising partner and launched FAWN, a YouTube multi-channel network. In 2014 her YouTube channel was listed on the “New Media Rockstars‘” Top 100 Channels (number 48)
Not all of Phan’s cash comes from her vlogging career though. In fact, a good chunk of it comes from promotions. In 2010 she landed her first big deal with Lancôme after featuring their products in her videos. She became the company’s first Vietnamese spokesperson. The following year Phan co-founded “MyGlam” (now ipsy), a mostly subscription service for beauty products. Ipsy is valued at over $500 million.
The young makeup artist has a few other beneficial deals on her portfolio too. L’Oreal launched em by Michelle Phan in 2013, which has earned Phan a bit of cash. She also has a partnership with Endemol Beyond USA to build YouTube content for millennials and in 2014 she began to dip her toes into the music world by partnering with Cutting Edge Group (CEG) to launch Shift Music Group. The 30-year-old has even launched a book called “Make Up: Your Life Guide to Beauty, Style, and Success — Online and Off.”
It seems like Phan has been extremely successful and has been able to diversify her portfolio of investments and work opportunities. What has all of that hard work done for Michelle Phan’s net worth?
Michelle Phan’s Net Worth
Michelle Phan’s net worth is estimated to be about $50 million, which is surprisingly low considering her makeup subscription company is valued at $500 million. However, a net worth of $50 million at the age of 30 is no small feat so how did she get her?
It’s true that Michelle Phan’s net worth didn’t grow over night. She has been working online (starting with her blog and graduating to having her own YouTube network) since 2005. That is 12 years! Like many other internet stars, she is pulling in quite a bit of cash from the streaming website. Phan has accrued 8.8 million subscribers over the years and her videos have gotten more than 1 billion views. As you may know, those numbers equate to a lot when it comes to YouTube payouts.
In addition to her YouTube revenue Phan also rakes in a bit of cash through her various makeup deals. As mentioned above she has a couple big deals with two of the largest makeup producers in the world: Lancôme and L’Oreal.
What has made the 30-year-old makeup artist a success is that she is always looking forward and focusing on the future, what she needs to do next. Last year Phan announced she would voice Jessica Jones on the mobile game “Marvel Avengers Academy.” She is also continuing work with her YouTube channel and progressing her makeup collections. It seems Phan is focused on creating an empire so this won’t be the last you see of her.
