I use my Discover card for the majority of my spending and some of my bills. To us, it is a nice bonus to get the Red Lobster certificates for "free'. The total amount is automatically deducted from my checking account each month. I never carry a balance. BUT, we do not have kids. There is just the 2 of us and we can say no to ourselves. There is nothing we need, just a few wants. lynclarke

That's what the thread is about, the people who don't get it!

For anyone in here who has ever tried unsuccessfully to convert someone to tightwaddery, it's a known fact.

The problem with other people is they want to spend and borrow other people's money after they have sacrificed and saved it.

But does it have to be tightwaddery? - Isn't there a way to save and have not debt but still enjoy your life? I believe there is! - it's all about choices and what you feel that you want your life to be about? Unfortunately most people choose to just spend spend spend - and don't realize that it doesn't have to be one or the other. and then they don't understand why someone would want to save save save.

I'm not sure if I made sense here :-)

Exactly! DH and I just planned a trip to Vegas at the end of the month. We save to go there and spend (within a predetermined budget of course!)
we also live in a nice house and drive nice cars. Some people know that we are doing well and are saving well and don't want to be with us as they get annoyed that we won't spend our money willy nilly - then they see us travel and we usually splurge then. - it's like they don't know what to say to us. It's weird.

            Oh well

For me there are no negative connotations to the word tightwad. I claim it as a positive word. But that's just me being a dork. (I also consider nerd and geek positives.)

I think it's about priorities. Scrimp on certain things to have other things.

My in-laws were disgusted that we/I did not want to spend $500 on taking my husband's 5 siblings, assorted spouses/ sig others, and parents out to dinner ( and obviously drinking) ONE night when we visited the east coast. My m-i-l said, 'do not come without $500 to spend for dinner". No one seemed to understand that we spent $500 to get there!! Seemed pretty clear to me!! Guess when we will be going back again? Can you say the day after xxxx freezes over? lynclarke

Welcome to the club! I have the same problem with some family members and I'm sure many here can identify with you as well. When you are a good money manager people feel you should spend it on them. If you won't they get

Wow that seems presumptous! I think I wouldn;t be going back either. We went to my BIL2 wedding last summer in Calgary and my other BIL1 didn't give him a gift because of the expense to get there for the wedding. We considered that as well but realized that it really wasn't about the money for my BIL1 - he just doesn't like my BIL2 LOL

So we just gave a smaller gift to BIL2 and explained that it was because of the expense etc. to get out there and stay there.

Why would they assume you were going to take everyone out for dinner?

Oprah has talked about how once she had money, relatives came out of the woodwork and she was amazed at what they would boldly ask for. Like one cousin wanted a Mercedes and asked Oprah to buy it for them!

I guess that just goes back to how some people feel entitled in the world. I think it is sad.

This thread is hilarious. I have friends who buy rounds of shots for each other for a $100-$200 bill at the end of the night, then envy me because Im taking a week vacation up north.

Hello! If you stopped wasting your money on stupid things like that, you could too!

I know it amazes me how much people drink and spend on drinking while they are out on the weekend. Actually some will go out every night! at $8 a drink (depending) say 12 drinks a week) thats $96 a week * say 45 weeks a year (I will assume they don't go every week) thats over $4000 a year! - thats a nice vacation! This is why they have accumulated debt I guess.

I don't drink just because I don't like too, and my husband may have a drink if we go out. Thats our choice. I guess others choose to go out and drink and party. Its all a choice.
