I agree! If you give, they'll just expect handouts. When you eventually say no, they'll get angry and won't understand why.

Dh works long hard hours, and I have certainly worked hard too. Right now my job is saving $$ where we can and preparing the house for sale so we can get a good price. Once we move, I will be employed once again.

They think b/c DH makes good $$ then I should be happy staying at home not working. Then they also think I'm lazy and spoiled to stay home and not work. And they don't understand when I make comments (I try not to make them at all) like, no, I just won't spend that much for such and such.... But I don't have a starbucks habit and I don't need a fancy car. I need peace and I have been in debt and that's a bondage I never want again.

I am one of 5 siblings. We all feed our families and take care of ourselves but I was the one who did "well."

When this is the case family expect you be the "banker" for any and all tragedies in the family. After all you have all that money, "You're not gonna sit by and see so and so on the street/without this or that, ,are you?
I think we all know what you will be if you sit by and see so and so on the street, etc.

I have one sister who is a financial blizzard and she refuses to aknowledge same. At this very moment we are not speaking because she owes me money which I have waited for over a year for her to return.

She spends her last on her hair, or videos because according to her "I'm going to live my life." She's been late with her rent on several occasions and borrows from everyone else in the family. Her biggest problem is paying me back because according to her "you have all that money."

I'm glad to have someone to talk to about this. Most of the people I know have financial problems. They don't understand money and can't understand anyone who has it.

Yes, it's annoying. I guess sometimes its a blessing we don't live closer and have to hear about it as much as when we were in the same town. Kinda sad, actually.

But family is family and I love em all the same.

Funny though, how at times they really looked down on me when I would take extra jobs at minimum wage after working a full day at my professional job to make the ends meet -- they would NEVER work at the dollar theatre -- what if somebody you know comes in? You're 25 years old, aren't you embarassed to have a teenagers job?

My answer, No! I'm embarassed to have debt up to my eyeballs for no good reason and I'd rather take care of it now like this than get evicted or lose my car! I'm proud of paying off all my debt by myself -- that's acceptable pride to me -- their kind of pride-- I'd rather not! And you know, the people I knew that came there always were happy to see me -- I don't think it bothered them at all that I was filling their popcorn tub!

When I lend something- in my head I use the words give away -but to the other person, I make sure I say how many bedpans I had to carry to get that amount. I get really burned over others thinking we have money because a magic genie smiled upon us. We have a small amount of money because I have never had my nails done- toes or fingers- a massage, a photo shoot, a new outfit not on the clearance rack, a designer perfume, or a dozen other "premium" items. Do I want those things? No. But, after someone else buys all those things and then runs out of money, i have a REAL hard time offering any sympathy. lynclarke

It's also a fully funded Roth IRA each year!!

I have enjoyed this thread more than any other I think I have read on the net to date! I think I have fianlly found a home here! I started off at the Rich Dad forum, and quickly found out that I didn't want to hang out there. Finally, a place where people think like me and vica-versa, and I can openly admit it without being told how stupid I am!!.

Do you ever wish other peoples debt amounts floated above their heads? Perhaps fewer people would have debt if everyone knew how much they had. A friend of mine was just showing off his new car. Everyone thinks he's doing so great. Would they think he was doing so great then if they knew that he owed $20k+ in credit cards, $70K+ in student loans, and $35k+ in auto loans?

You have a point, except there are some strange folks who would probably flaunt it!

The goverment is horrible at budgeting. Need proof, just take a look at the national debt. That is the reason we have inflation. The dollar is just not worth what it used to be. The reason for poor budgeting is that if a department does not use all of it's money, it will lose funding for the next year. This is a bad example to set for the people of the United States. Even here in New Jersey, the budget was so out of whack (NJ was one of only two states with a deficeit, the other was Louisana). The whole state had to shut down for a few days until they could agree on a budget that will put us back on the right track. Everyone wants to give you a credit card, everyone wants you to spend money, it's a capitalist/consumer economy. Sometimes I get angry at all the stupid advertisements depicting love, and happiness, or success because of buying a new fabric softener. You almost have to march to the beat of a different drum. The steady saver, saves the most

You know, B4freedom, if I had had a bubble over my head, I would have never gotten into all that debt. Or I would have had to avoid my dad for all those years! Heck, I hid the debt from MYSELF as much as I hid it from others. But yes, I think that would sure change things... and yes, there would still be folks who wouldn't be any different. Sheesh!

California has a deficit too, so I think most of the states have it now.

Wyoming usually has a huge surplus year after year, currently around $1B (give or take a few million). That, plus several other reasons, is why Wyoming will be the location of my new retirement residence. Heck, I am only 18 miles south of the Wyoming border now, so it will still be like I am at home

Lifestyle certainly makes a difference. I'd die from boredom if I lived in Wyoming.

My recreation is hiking, fishing, hunting, climbing, and ATVing in the summer, and skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. The Snowy Range outside of Cheyenne is so beautiful. I think when people think of Wyoming, all they can picture is flat plains, wind, and dust. The Snowy's and the Tetons are more beautiful than some of Colorados mountains, and I'm a Colorado native!! I think you would only be bored if you committed to doing nothing......

I grew up in Wyoming and I loved it, but if your the big city type you would die of boredom. You have to like the outdoors, wind, winter and vast planes of nothingness. There is a reson why it is the least populated state. Not a whole lot there, but hey, I'd bet land is pretty cheep.

Alaska is another state that always has a huge surplus. At least that's what I here, don't you get a surplus check every year if you are a resident there? Maybe not this year thanks to BP though
