  • Have you seen gas prices?

I have a mileage tracking spreadsheet for my DH so we track what we spend on gas. Wowza. I knew gas went up but on 2/16/21 last I filled it was $2.70/gallon. Filled up yesterday 3/17/21 for $3.10/gallon. Big jump fast i think. They are talking about $4/gallon this summer. Has gas price jumped where you are?

I mean we drove about 50% miles less in 2020 than 2019, but prices were also higher. This year DH switched jobs and I WFH, and we probably aren't roadtripping.

If I bought gas once a month like you I probably wouldn't worry too much about the price at the pump.
I'd be spending more on car insurance per month than I would on gas if I were in that situation

Gas is around $3.05 here. Its actually one thing I dont really care that much about. I put around 15 gallons in per week.

          15 gallons
          $2.70 = $40.50
          $3.05 = $45.75
          $4 = $60

Even if it goes to $4/gallon, thats only $19.50 more per week, which is $78 more per month. We're fortunate that is has no impact on us. Even with other goods and services increasing because of higher fuel costs, it still doesnt do much to us. I feel for those who are impacted by it though. I would never want to be in that sort of position.

Same here, especially since COVID arrived. I put in 1/2 a tank once a week or once every other week. An extra dollar or two a gallon is insignificant even over the course of a year.

Thankfully, I'm not a traveling salesman or road warrior driving hundreds of miles each week. I completely understand how gas prices are far more impactful in that situation.

Since last year I've stopped paying attention to gas prices, even if my driving habits have lowered (not a lot). I fill up maybe every 6-8 day with WFH, and get 32-34 mpg on my 18yr old car. Plus it beats not having a car payment like a lot of my friends do.

Prices are way up, but it's not hitting us like it used to. We're now over a year into not having daily commutes, which has saved us about 25,000 miles worth of driving, just for our jobs. It's really something to think about going forward - the personal savings, the environmental impact for good, and how effective we've been outside of a daily centralized office routine. Not every job can or should be done remotely, but those that can be, maybe should be! I think about the impact to younger workers where commute expense is something to really think about, older workers who may not be in high dollar jobs, where freeing up commute expense could accelerate late retirement savings, help with healthcare expense, etc.

We have been taking some winter RV trips because we can, so that's by far been our highest fuel expense. Totally elective, and worth every penny to keep the winter blues in check and get out and do something.
                History will judge the complicit.

Nope it's not the spending but it's sticker shock. Only going to the pump once a month means I don't pay any attention at all to gas prices. I see news headlines but it doesn't have any impact. And unfortunately we do spend more on car insurance than gas per month. A lot more. Considering we pay around $2500/year for 2 cars and 2 drivers it's not an insignificant amount. I am not quite ready to give up our 2nd car though. I really like the minivan and my DH does too. I feel like it'll turn into our 3rd car we just hang onto forever and run into the ground for all our home projects.

We've definitely noticed a significant spike lately. Back in Jan/Feb, I remember it being around $2.40/gal for us here. Now, it's $3.00-$3.10. While it's not going to break us, it's certainly surprising to see the dramatic change.

I definitely noticed or paid more attention to prices between states on my most recent trip in early March. Vegas was around $3 per gal, areas of UT around 2.79-2.99. In CA, the valley and K-Town about 3.79-4, downtown Los Angeles highest was 5.49, but just outside around 4.79.

I noticed an increase to fill my tank, but I can never tell you the average price per gallon.
