  • Have you ever won a dispute on your credit report?

About a year ago I received a bill from a debt collector supposedly from a doctors office in my area that I've never used. Called the docs office, they confirmed they did not have an account for me or record of outstanding payments. Notified the collector this was not legit and I'd need documentation if they thought they had something. They continued to try to bully me into paying them and last time I spoke to them I presented all my evidence and told them to stop calling me. Few months go by and this week I get a letter from a NEW collector - old collector sold the debt to someone else On top of that, days after receiving my first notice, it showed up on my credit report. Honestly, I thought the last one was a scam since the doc said they didn't have an account. Now with it being on my card, I'm not sure if there's more to the story than I know or ... can they really just report anything they want without proof?? I've already submitted the dispute request but was just curious if anyone has encountered this and won? I'm looking to pick up a couple properties this year, and while I'm not overly concerned about my score, any lender will likely make me pay it off before they'd finance a property for me if I can't get it resolved.

You should definitely file a dispute. It is the collector's responsibility to provide proof that you owe the money. I haven't personally had any issues but lots of people get things on their credit report corrected all the time.

I had a tax lien show up that was an error. I filed a dispute, but I had a letter from the state that said it was an error so that helped a lot. They removed the lien and my credit report was clear again.

Yes I have refused to pay the collections for Frontier $200. They said I didn't return the cable box. I absolutely returned it. I had a tracking number, email, etc. I said I even have a code from frontier. BUT frontier never figured out if I returned a cable box. I did. I said no way get it straight I'm not paying it. I reported them to the secretary of state and BBB. Not sure what happened but i wasn't about to pay for something I knew i had returned.

Yes, once a collector contacted my now ex-husband re: an unpaid medical bill. It was from a small community hospital where now ex-h had once been taken for treatment when injured on the job. Now ex-h asked the collector for documentation and it never arrived. Fast forward a few years, it was on his credit report. I disputed it and it was removed.

Just FYI, the debt was the obligation of ex-h's employer and their worker's comp insurance carrier. I provided the contact information, which they should have already had, to the collector and left it at that.
