  • $100,000 to spend

    Something fun I saw online.

If you are handed $100,000 under the conditions that you can't invest it, use it to pay off debt, or buy/renovate real estate, what are you spending it on?

This was hard for me, as I am not a big spender, so I don't want for much.
I suppose a new(er) cars for the wife and I would be up there on the list.
Maybe new lawn equipment as well.
A nice vacation could be on the list as well.

I've been looking at old muscle cars.
Might be a good way to blow that cash

The new Ram TRX. I will probably buy one closer to retirement in 5 years anyway.

I don't know if it would cover it or not, but I'd like to buy a sail boat and take off for a trip around the world.

Now keep in mind I know absolutely zero about boats, but I think it would be an awfully fun way to spend $100k !

Says you can't invest it, but doesn't say you can't save it Can I just keep it in my checking account to fund our first couple years of retirement? lol
Retirement for us looks like full time travel so really I'd be spending it on a very extended trip. It would take us a while to burn through that amount of money even if we really glammed it up from our usual travel style.

If I had to spend it in a set amount of time, I guess I'd gift a large percentage of it. There's really nothing material that would benefit me right now given we're in sell off all our things mode in preparation for listing the house next year.

I would spend it all on traveling with my immediate family. Wherever we all decided to go, I don't much care.

I’d probably split it between a long trip and things that make life better. But I would definitely spend a month travelling somewhere I’d never normally go first.

Since the question gives no time frame, I too would do what riverwed said, and just keep the money in checking, where I would then slowly use it to pay off my monthly bills eventually.

My thoughts were pretty much the same.
A year or two away from financial independence... There's nothing I really want more than a down payment for our next home (planned downsize; the cash is so we can settle in our next home before we sell this one), and/or more non-retirement savings (for our 50s).

I thought about cars because at least there's some longer-term savings and benefit, if we replace our cars now. I was thinking of also just buying our kids a couple of $10K cars. But anyway, then I realized I couldn't even come up with much on this front because if we replaced our perfectly good cars, then I'd just give those cars to our kids. So at best, that's $30K to spend on (2) cars? (This would give our household 4 significant car upgrades.) That still leaves $70K to figure out. Which is when I started thinking if I couldn't just save it to use for our near-term future goals, then all I could come up with was charity.

My spouse said he would make a movie with $100K. I can see we are both set on the paths we are already on. He is planning to make a movie this year, $100K or no $100K.

I'd put that $100,000 straight on the stock market.
