January 2026 represents the highest number of layoffs recorded in 17 years. That's a somber headline to be reading next to the Dow cracking 50k, the two would appear to be at odds with each other.

Also, remember "the economy is booming" -people in 2026 are the same ones who were certain the economy wasn't doing well between 2021 and 2025 despite record upon record growth and the lowest unemployment and good trade agreements. But hey, Dow 50k is good news regardless.

That will likely be tied up in the courts for years to come. I don't think it will have any meaningful effect. Hopefully saner heads will prevail.

Automakers aren't likely to jump on board with any big changes. They have the rest of the developed world to answer to and cooler heads know that all this theater will vanish soon.

UA-Guy - do think ICE's massive budget is a problem? Yes, I do think its a problem. They're building a domestic gulag system and engaging in massively unconstitutional activity. Its worse than Guantanamo. And obvious to anyone with half a brain.

And yes, I want the SA forums to be a highly engaged place.

And, a lot of progressives seem to want to deny this, I don't know why, but Democrats are into extractive taxation and budget deficits, and unfortunately a lot of their funding priorities go to organizations that are involved in power maintenance for Democrats. This is happening at the Federal level as well as here in Oregon.

The same is true for every party, present party being one of the most egregious examples. State and Federal levels. But I'm failing to see how funding education, healthcare, and the like are seen as power maintenance for any party. The funding for those things comes from taxes, and, as we know, the cost of everything has gone up. So taxes must go up too if present funding levels are maintained.

Here in WA, there are a lot of people who simply do not register their vehicles anymore because it's so expensive to do so. The police are fighting with legislators and saying they will not enforce laws around lapsed registrations because they believe the legislature created the problem with excessively high fees. That's not how things work, but so goes both rogue legislative and rogue police bodies. Roads and transit have to be paid for and that isn't accomplished with regressing registration fees back to an even $30 like they were in the early 1990's.

I think you understand that, and I'm trying to steer clear of strictly politics. Car tabs being a local example. Funding national priorities is the larger discussion. Note: I don't think we've seen the reduction in spend, or reduction in taxes commensurate with with the current administration promised. With carte blanche power, the responsibility rests on them to do so, if that is truly a priority.

I read that this was chalked up to lower gas prices. We recently fueled up at a Buc-ee's in Springfield, MO and the price was 2.14 a gallon. I was shocked--told DH maybe it will get below $2.00/ gallon in that area? (We were were only visiting that area, gas is about 2.80 -2.90 a gallon where we live--and of course Buc--ee's prices are usually a good deal).

But let me get this straight. Inflation was higher than baseline, just less than expected. That's good news on paper but still amounts to prices increasing at a faster rate than desired. One potential upside. It means people will likely still be pissed about prices ("the economy") later this year, if they're not already planning to vote their conscience on everything else.
