  • What's the most you've paid for a car?

I saw in another thread that the average new car loan is $30,000 (and that's 2016 data). So I was wondering how everyone here stacks up.

What is the most you've ever paid for a car (regardless of how you paid or how much you borrowed)?

I believe our most expensive vehicle was right around 25K. All of our current vehicles were less than that. My wife's van was about 21K. My car was 16K. DD's car was 5K.

$27K for our 2007 Honda Odyssey in 2008. I still drive it everyday. It has 130K miles. We did finance most of it, but paid it off in 2.5 years. Planning to drive it for another 4 or 5 years, when our youngest daughter should be done with college.

$19k for a brand new 2009 Honda Odyssey, paid cash. It was the first time I ever bought a car all by myself. My DH would have nothing to do with it because his dad worked for GM and was against having a foreign car.

I did it all on line thru email, learned a lot about Dealer Hold back and how to negotiate. We got, I think it was $4500 for our clunker (85 conversion van) so that helped to bring the price down. Of course it's a basic model, only power windows and locks, but hey it's been a great van, no problems, still going strong almost 10 years later. And no payments!!!

We bought our Honda Odyssey (Nov 19, 2005) 2006 SL Nav $34,500 after discount

We still drive it to this day with 195K mileage and still going strong. Never had any issues.

My wife's Acura MDX in 2011 for $45k. Financed for 7 years at 6% interest. Ack, barf.

I must say, now that we pay cash for cars, we look at them differently. We went shopping for a new car for my wife late last year as she was getting the itch to replace her 6 year old MDX. Settled on the new Audi Q5 for $55k. Then when we went to commit $55k of our hard earned money, she said maybe we could get another few years out of the MDX. Back in our financing days, we would have never thought twice about getting another 7 year loan. Heck, if they offered 10 year loans, we'd be all over that. Just a different mindset when you are in the finance everything game.

I bought a VW Golf TDI (the evil diesel) in 2012 for ~$28k with all of the goodies. Paid half in cash, financed the rest at 1.9% for 3 yrs (or something like that), paid it off ASAP.

That was a couple months before I bought my first home, so I was preserving cash for the down payment... Otherwise, I'd have just paid cash entirely.

I traded that one in with the VW diesel buyback program, and replaced it with a 2017 Golf (gas version) for a total of ~$2k out of pocket (actual purchase price ~$23k). I accidentally made out fairly well with that pair of car purchases.

$26.2K for a new, nicely loaded 2010 Prius, our first "luxury" (to us) vehicle. I am the primary driver. No loan.

1-1/2 years ago I gave DH the green light to buy a new car, spending up to $28.9K. But 1-1/2 years later he still hasn't replaced his '99 Camry. If he wanted to buy a new car today I'd greenlight him to spend up to $37.6K. But I doubt he'd spend that much. I will definitely encourage him to "get what he wants and add a couple nice bells and whistles."

$13k. Just happens to be what both our current vehicles cost. & both are far more expensive than any cars we bought prior.

One is a (fully loaded) sedan we bought recently (purchased @2 years old) and the other was a one-year-old minivan we bought in 2006. We keep our cars for 15-20 years. Probably aiming to spend $10k - $15k when we replace the van, but after that I am guessing price won't be an object. By then our home should be paid off and our kids should be done with college. In the interim, housing is just too expensive where we live to have spent any more on vehicles.

$28k. Just bought a used minivan Toyota Sienna and it's lovely. Never had so many bells and whistles and it's awesome. DH also spent $28k on a subaru legacy with eyesight. Very nice car.

Our most recent trip, DH commented that it's the first time in our lives that our rental car, a hyundai sonata was less nice than the cars we were driving. Never happened before. We've always had really nice rental cars compared to what we've owned.

How will we ever go back? I will admit I might also be hooked on 2-3 year old used cars because mine is so nice. But ask me in a few years if I still feel that way.

We special ordered a 2003 Chrysler 300M Special. I think the bill was $42,000 but we paid $36,000 cash with the employee discount. It might have been $38,000. I would gladly do it again if I could. I loved that car.

At this moment? 33k for a year old 2011 Yukon. I originally financed it for 5 years, but paid it off in 3. Still have it. Love that vehicle, as much as someone can love a vehicle without it being weird.

That said, when I save up enough cash, I'm selling it and buying a new pickup. And at that point, that will be the most I will ever spend on a vehicle.

$10k is my limit for any vehicle

NEVER financed, always cash on the spot.

Current trucks I've had for 14 years and 3 years.

Paid close to $45,000 for my last pickup truck which is the most I have paid to date for a vehicle. I'm sure the next one will be more in a couple years

Paid $127K for a Ferrari 360 Stradale once. I drove it for about 6 mos and sold it for $133-ish IIRC.

                              That was pretty cheap driving.
