  • Tough to Find a New Truck

I put approx. 25k miles annually on my pickup truck and tend to replace it every 4-5 years. Have been kicking it around for a while and stopped by dealership this morning. The place only had two new 1/2 tons pickups on the lot (would typically have 20-30), so if you want something in particular there is a remote chance they can get you one at another dealer, or you have to order. Pricing isn't crazy, the manufacturers are just backed up and behind due to parts shortages, etc.

For first time ever, I ordered a new pickup, delivery expected anywhere between 6-13 weeks.

It's pretty crazy. I was looking at a new Silverado. Last summer and fall they had some deep discounts on straggling 2020 models. I watched one that I thought I might go look at, a leftover 2020 Ext cab RST 4x4 with some decent options. More of a want than a need, so dragged my feet.

It and every other truck is gone except for a couple of 2021's which are priced near MSRP. Midsize trucks are even crazier.

I don't think it's just trucks. The chip shortage is causing production delays of all types of vehicles.

The KBB on my truck is the same now as when I bought it.
4 years and 50,000 miles later.
        Crazy.

Glad I'm not in the market for a car right now.

Just for giggles, I just ran ours through the KBB estimator. It says ours is worth a couple thousand more now than when we bought it new two years ago. These are unusual times.

            Right?

I have half a mind to just sell my current truck because apparently it's worth a mint. We've got an extra vehicle, so I could drive that until if/when I ever needed a newer vehicle again. I could certainly find a place for about $32k cash, if KBB/Nada are anywhere near true.

I have a one ton diesel.
Those traditionally hold their value pretty well in normal times.
Apparently it's holding up exceptionally well now.

I have no plans to sell it or trade it.
It was just an interesting exercise to look at the value in today's market.

We have a three quarter ton, also a diesel. If we were to sell or trade it, we would just have to buy another one, so I don't see the point of that.

                  same here.
even with it being worth so much I couldn't touch the price of a new one.
I'd still be financing a ton, or putting down a lot of cash.
And, good luck finding a used one.
I'm just going to hang onto this one for a while

I paid $24,500 for my 2015 Chevy 2500HD gasser w/ 48,000 miles last Mar. That was pretty much what KBB said it was worth. KBB now says it's worth $28k. I won't sell it because I need it to pull the camper and I can't afford a new truck. There are new trucks on autotrader.com selling for $10k over MSRP. Crazy times.

Wow! I had no idea this was happening.

EVERYTHING is going up. WAY up. We are having great difficulty hiring people at any price, which is driving labor costs through the roof. Our biggest competitors are stimulus checks and rich unemployment benefits.
