I've been away from the board for about a year. L2P emailed me today and I thought I would just check in and say howdy. Might even start commenting some. I hope everyone is safe and well, it's been quite a haul.

Welcome back! Great to see you. I hope you'll give us an update on how things have been going for you with the salons, the cabins, and all.Steve

Howdy guys and thanks. Yes Texas got it hard. I live in the panhandle, and that sort of winter is not unusual here, so we were unaffected. Downstate though, it was a big deal.
My businesses are doing well. We have been blessed. Aside from almost 2 months of closure, our Great Clips salons were down in 2020, but not a lot. We didn’t lay anyone off, so once we got the all-clear to re-open, everyone was ready to go.
I told our teams that we would not be participating in the COVID hysteria - reduced hours, silly policies, etc. Wear your masks, use proper cleaning, and let’s move on.
I have seen so many businesses failing because they decided to buy into the hysteria. Short staffed, wild and crazy policies imposed on their customers based on backyard epidemiology, failure to deliver good service whilst using COVID as an excuse. They got sucked in and it cost them their business.
The vacation rentals had a record year. Picked up a couple more properties.

I'm not at all surprised that the rentals have done well. Lots of folks who would normally have traveled internationally stayed domestic instead, and a lot of typical domestic destinations have been closed or severely restricted. Folks who wanted to avoid hotels and restaurants and crowds found renting a house much more appealing. It was the ideal time to be in that business.
Personally, we have done zero travel, which is unprecedented for us. If we had traveled, it would have been to a rental home most likely, if for no other reason than that we wouldn't have to live on take out food the whole time.Steve

I took some time off these boards too...around 4 months since I last posted. Had to move over to bogleheads and ER. This place was getting too heated with covid and politics. Those other places do not tolerate any of that stuff so it was more relaxed during that time.
