Just buzz! Especially during the summer months. Most clippers will pay for themselves after the first use.

LOL! Yes, must consider male/female perspective here.

I cut my own every 2 weeks. I've been through 2 sets of clippers in about 10 years. The expense is easily recovered/justified.

Not to change the subject, but we still pay for hair stylists in my household. The DOG gets taken to a groomer at least once/year. I brush the dog and clip his nails regularly, but there comes a point in the spring where he's got too much fur. We do a mobile groomer because we don't think it's fair that he is locked in a kennel for half a day. She charges something like $70, plus we tip.
      History will judge the complicit.

I pay a lot more than that, and the hair salon is now a line item in my budget.

In addition to cut and color, I also have started getting it straightened, so it's quite a $$$ line item when looking at annual costs. Worth it to me though.

Interesting thought and very true. After all the years of having home haircuts when I married hubby, he realized that it was very special for me to get my hair cut right and too look good. So to him, even more than myself, it is worth it as he knows I feel better about myself after getting it done. Especially now as I'm restricted by health problems from doing many things that other women my age can do, this is a simple yet not horribly pricey thing that I can still do to feel 'normal'. I get to talk to my hair dresser who is a friend, chat with the other ladies and feel like one of the gang.

$10 once or twice a year - I am not a salon type gal - feels like a chore more than anything.

Just had to chuckle at the male/female comments. My spouse probably spends much more on his hair just simply because he has to get it cut more often.

I admit I have tended to my current hairstyle over the years because it is extremely low-maintenance, and I have never had anyone mess up the cut. I apparently stumbled on "easiest haircut ever" though I would prefer a little bit more of a style than anything I could do myself/at home. I can splurge $20-ish per year for nice hair.

It is free if you are going to do it yourself! I have been working with my own haircut ever since I can remember. These are one of the few easy steps that I do to save money. In other countries, haircuts cost about 2 USD. Some of my friends make sure that they pass by a salon before going home. It is a long shot but it is really fun and exciting.

$20 every 3-4 weeks for my DH. I spend $100 maybe 2-3x a year, although now I don't highlight and just cut so like $40. Also I admit to loving short hair but I have to go every 6-8 weeks to keep it up. The problem is the ease of washing, drying and barely styling is great. So I always cut my hair short right before I have a baby and then let it go for 6 months.

That is thinking ahead! When I had my knees replaced they had a little beauty parlor set up and on Thursdays a lady would come in and wash, cut and dry your hair for you so you would look decent going home where showering, etc is a bit harder. I think they also recognized that women felt better about themselves once the got rid or the bed/hospital head. When you feel better about your looks, you also do better physically. There is something about dirty hair that weighs a woman down.

                    $15 including a tip.

How often I get it cut depends on how long I'm wearing it. If it's long, like now, I go maybe 3 times a year. If I'm wearing it short, every month or two.

I'm 34 and I'm starting to see a few grays. I do plan to cover my gray at least initially. If my "Just For Redheads" henna doesn't do the job, I might get color done at a salon and I have no idea what that costs.

I would cut my own if I could, but it's very thick and requires a lot of layering and thinning. It's a bit too involved for me.

After my mom died, I started going to a beauty school for my haircuts. The cost? $4. Yes, $4.

I don't mind students cutting my hair; they get practice, I get a cheap (and decent) haircut. You people who pay a lot might want to look into that. Be aware, it's students, make sure you look at the school's policy first. The one I go to doesn't let students cut customers's hair until they've had a lot of practice on each other and on mannequins. Make sure you know how much practice the students get before they're allowed to touch a stranger's hair!

I think haircuts might just cost more in general here. They are $16 at the beauty school. I don't even think you can get one at a Supercuts for less than 25. Not counting tip on either of those. And I've had enough bad cuts from students and inexpensive salons that I won't even bother anymore.

It is worth it for me to spend the money for a good cut because when the cut is good I don't have to spend money on hair product, or time styling it. I wash it, air dry and that's it. Since I don't use any styling products I can wash it far less often as well.

I am happy to get my haircut anywhere with a $8 or $10 coupon. BUT... Beauty school? Heck no. (Ours is expensive, and not so good). This is my way of saying that I don't consider myself picky in the slightest, but I don't know if you could pay me to get my hair cut at the beauty school.

I suppose some people like it; your mileage may vary. For me, I Can consistently get a much better cut for cheaper, anywhere else. I suppose I am picky in that I am used to having consistently good hair cuts.

I take my daughter to the beauty school. Her hair type is not difficult to cut, and she gets a very simple cut, so it works out well. I've had good cuts at beauty schools and not so good cuts. The girl I see now I used to also see when she was in beauty school.

What does everyone think a tip should be around on average? Men/Women

Im asking the question because my sister cuts hair for a living and its a tough job with very little pay. Sometimes they rent chairs or cannot afford to start up there own business which is a totally different story.

15-20% is the average acceptable rate these days. I work for tips and don't get insulted unless it's well under 10%. Where I live cosmetology can be a very well paying career.
