Amen on the too tight clothing! I like to watch What Not to Wear and some of these gals (young and old alike) wear what's in fashion although it doesn't really fit their bodies. Like the jeans that are low riders -- many have them too tight so it looks like they have belly overhand when they are, in fact, thin. Not a pretty sight!

Well I feel better about dressing this way.. Its simple.. and comfortable. Whereas when I was 19 I remember always feeling aware of my belly or hips and made me feel a touch insecure. I used to try on clothes after clothes and it was difficult to find things I felt comfortable to wear let alone that flattered my shape.
I don't have to worry about those things anymore.. which is really nice. They hubby mostly likes me under the covers anyway

Where I spend money is on laundry and maintenance. I tend to be painfully neat and fussy about fit and finish. Shoes spit-shined, khakis starched with knife-edge creases, button-down casual shirts also starched. (I like starch. ) I normally spend more on commercial laundering than I do on clothing, but I also look well turned out.

Definitely not. For work, my shirts usually come from the Van Heusen outlet or other discount place. My pants are usually from an outlet or Kohl's or Sears.

Outside of work, you'll usually find me in chinos from an outlet and a t-shirt from Target or Wal-Mart.

I'm like this. I have dress shirts that I've had for 15 years or more. My FIL passed away in 1993 and wore the same size as me. I took a lot of shirts from his closet when we were getting rid of his stuff. I have no idea how long he had some of them, but I'm still wearing them regularly. I don't usually buy more than 4-5 new shirts in a year and some years I won't buy any at all. Same for pants.

My husband is really good on clothes, and Has actually lost weight. I did have to get his some new pants when he lost weight, but we buy clothes thru the penney's catalog and they fit great. His shirts have lasted for year. We don't spend much on clothes at all.

My dh was given some shorts from his friend who lost some weight. Even though, those shorts are like 2 sizes biger than my dh needs, he accepted them and uses them regularly, the only thing is he has to wear belt with them, and he uses them at home only. I was going to buy him some, buy since he got some for free, I didn't.

lol... i think you guys have an advantage over me... the longest i've had clothes is about 10 years... then again, i'm only 24 ... and i also got them used at yard sales so there is no telling how old my clothes actually are...

those of you that don't shop much seem low-maintenance to me as i am always getting "new" clothes from yard sales, but then i started thinking about it... since my size is so easy to find at yard sales (very lucky for me) i feel like even the clothes at affordable places cost too much for me to justify buying it for myself... i might buy several quality shirts (ie. ann taylor, INC, etc) for 0.50 cents each but can't bring myself to pay $10 for a generic shirt at the store...

She spent that much each month in clothes.
Could you get them to pay you in clothes? As I recall, you are pretty slender.

But remember, it isn't a bargain if you don't need it. I could find more clothes at great prices at yard sales or thrift stores, but I have all the clothes I need. I don't go out looking for clothes unless I need to replace something that has gotten worn out or stained. I don't shop just to shop, even if the prices are great.

lol... thanks for the input and it is a great point... it has occurred to me before... alas, they are my weakness... one of very few... i know it's not the most frugal thing in the world but it is something i enjoy...

i admire those of you that only buy what you absolutely need and then replace them as they wear out...sometimes i wish i could be more like that... i hope that as i get older and settle into a more defined style i'll feel less need for so much clothes... my mom was like that... when she was younger she had tons and tons of clothes and now all of her clothing fits into 2 drawers and around 2 feet of closet space...

as for myself, right now i am still trying out various styles and enjoying it all... i enjoy dressing different depending on the occasion and the feel i am going for... casual, classic, chic, cute, feminine, elegant, eclectic, trendy, retro, etc...

I don't dress like I have money, I dress like a model. A lot of models have money. I am a very meticulous young man and I believe one of the things that makes life very easy for me is that I am well-kept, well-dressed, and well-poised. Cleanliness, courteousness, and charisma break even the strongest social barriers (racial, religious, and age included). The reason I say cleanliness is because there is something about high-end clothing that just looks cleaner; the whites are brighter, the jeans are more blue, the shoes shine better, it's just a much cleaner look.

Dressing "like you have money" I believe has somewhat to do with self-image (not self-esteem, self-image). Those who have a very "high-placed" self-image (meaning they see themselves as above average, not the norm, unique, somehow a step above; or see themselves as derserving such a status) are likely to do and buy things that are consistent with that notion.

Haha rob62521!! I say this all the time to my kids when we're out driving around and see some woman/girl in too-tight spandex or belly-flopping hip huggers or men in the baggybutt jeans looking absolutely ridiculous... "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!!"

Our priority has been on how to be well dressed while doing it on a tight budget. If we spent our precious income thoughtlessly we'd not have the money for charity or the large savings that we do, and we'd have cars, etc. that weren't paid for.

It's like someone else said - We cut back where we can so we can concentrate on our tithing, savings and investing. We don't want to be poor. We want to be able to give charitably. We need to meet all of our financial obligations now and in the future. We like to travel. We like to go out and eat and be entertained occasionally. If we didn't watch our pennies, then we couldn't do some of the other things we like to do. It's all about the priorities. Others may have different priorities and challenges.

"I feel that I have not got the self-image down, what one of my friends calls "The Look." It's not that I should know how to dress; I should know who I'm dressing. But when I group my clothing according to the traits conveyed, my closet looks like a convention of multiple-personality cases." ~Anna Quindlen

I dress in hand-me-downs from my mom who buys things on QVC that end up not looking right on her. Whatever clothes didn't come from her came from friends who were cleaning out their closets. I have no fashion style of my own! If I did, it would just be jeans and a sweatshirt. That was the style when I was in high school, and I am so thankful! I learned to dress comfortably.

My problem is my shoes! I only own two pair that I can wear. TWO! Not kidding. I have plantar fischitis (which I can not spell) and my feet are in constant pain. Shoes for me are quite expensive and not in the budget right now. I have a pair of tennis shoes and a pair of sandles, so if I wear a dress, I wear them with the brown sandles. And I have a white arch brace peaking out of those sandles to boot! My feet look absolutely rediculous, but I don't care! I have never cared. My mom was stilling doing my hair for me in the 7th grade because if she didn't, it wouldn't get done. No make-up, no nail-polish. I'm surprised I wear my wedding band, but I do and never take it off. I'm lucky with my hair though. It is naturally curly/wavy and very easy to do. I just wash and crimp. Otherwise, I would look completely shabby.

I agree quite a lot with Jaynen. I admire people who dress the way he describes, but it just isn't me. I believe I also have the personality/self-image to match. My personality is the type that takes pride in doing my own thing. My self-image is pathetic.

My kids, on the other hand, are dressed quite nice, although all purchased from the thrift store. I look good through them. Seriously, I am so proud of my boys and it shows.
