As for texting, we already pay $30/month for unlimited texting for all of us. Would I have to pay an additional $20/month for texting with the iPhone?
    Sorry,
I meant if you have an existing data plan, which I had for basic web browsing on my V9 Motorola. i.e. you cannot use the iphone from ATT without their data service.

I pre-ordered the 3GS 32GB model today. My original iPhone is pretty banged up and I'd love to have more storage space.

I've never had a bit of trouble with my old iPhone. It's made life alot easier with getting my emails and easy syncing of addresses, numbers, etc.

I love having all my photos with me, web browsing and youtube.

WOW! I just checked the prices on that thing on the AT&T website. I really hope you're getting a new 2-year contract with that thing ... $499 without a contract and 299 with a new contract.

yes, you get the lower price for renewing your contract. I've had my original iphone for 2 years. The new one is replacing that one.

I have an iTouch, not quite the phone but it still is a great tool. For a phone I have a Blackberry Curve. It's great. I've head that the battery life for an iPhone isn't very long. I know the life on my iTouch isn't very long.

Another thing, your iPhone (if you choose to get it) will get fingerprints allover the screen. It's just something I don't like getting on my iTouch. Thanks

Well... I finally did it. I went out and bought an i-phone. When i-phones first came out, the initial price was scary, but since the price has come down somewhat and my phone was starting to fall apart and needed replacing, I decided to go for an i-phone.

The data plan was the other major obstacle. <sigh> I'm still not tickled about having to pay that (for 2 years), but I guess I'll get over it.

I see what everyone means about the touch keyboard, it is going to take some time to get used to (me and my fat fingers! )...

I have looked at the aps store, but I keep thinking--what is a cheap person like me looking at aps that cost .99 a piece!? Oh well, for now I am going to focus on the free ones.

Steve, I definitely feel your pain regarding the price. I was going through the same thing you are about three weeks ago...continuously trying to figure out the cost benefit. I wanted a device that could make my life easier by reducing the time it takes me to call and text people, websurf, check stocks, email, figure out how to get places and help with directions on the way... I could keep going on and on but the pint is that the iPhone is the only device that delivers everything I want. After having it now for a couple of weeks I can honestly say it's worth every penny I spend each month. Good luck!

My computing life is Mac-centric, but I can't bring myself to buy the iPhone because of the cost of the monthly plan. I can't imagine that it will bring $30 worth of monthly improvement to my life (not saying it doesn't for others).

My advice is to wait. They've already released a less expensive iPhone and there's talk that it will be on Verizon next year when the exclusivity contract with ATT expires. Competition should bring prices down.

I remember when Motorola released the RAZR and it was the hottest selling phone before the iPhone (and in total sales it actually still out guns the iPhone) but it was something astronomical like $150—$300. But after two years you could get it for $50.

Wait 'em out! In a year (or two) this stuff will be run of the mill and the carriers can't charge premium prices for them anymore.

I've been very proud of my daughter. With her iPod touch, she has gotten almost all free apps. There have only been a couple that she paid for. She discovered pretty quickly, that there are free versions of most everything that there are pay versions of and the pay versions aren't necessarily all that much better.

I'm sure the Apple products will always charge a premium - always have, always will. Of course I'd be happy with a $10 premium instead of a $30 premium.

                      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
                      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
                      * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

After debating on ordering either the Iphone or Tmobile G-1 or Tmobile My touch, I decided on the G-1. I have been with T-mobile since their days as Powertel and they have provided me the utmost service. I currently have a unlimited talk plan special for their long time customers that's 49.99/month. With the G-1, I now have unlimited internet access and texting for an additional 34.99/month. The phone cost 149.00. I decided to get this because I do text a lot and the I-phone and MyTouch demo were a hassle touching the screen and trying to type 'i' and end up hitting another letter instead. You have to be very careful when typing with the touch screens. The G-1 provides me the keypad plus the option of touching the screen if need be.

There are protective covers for this.

I got an iPod touch off of craigslist and I'm pretty happy with it and it resurrected the ideas of getting an iPhone. When my phone plan was up, I tried all the Verizon touch screen phones and were disappointed. The interface was clunky. The touchscreen on the apples work much better.

The best part about it, is that I got a Sling Box and now I can watch my tv everywhere, well everywhere I can get a WiFi signal.

Rumor has it that the iPhone is not going to Verizon so it's still a moot point anyway.

These are things I use constantly on my iPod Touch. Some are limited by lack of G3 connectivity, but I may pick up a mifi gadget. Free wifi is usually not too hard to find if you know where to look. If I were to get a smartphone, I would probably get a Droid or a Nexus One.

Maps - Local map; directions; points of interest
                                - Knows your current location
Email - send/receive files, maps, photos, etc
                                - receives voicemail for my home phone, so I can check with iPod
Weather - handy for outdoor events; use browser for live Radar
Camera - always handy, no need for an extra gadget (not on iPod)
Stock Market - Major brokers usually have mobile apps/pages too
Calendar - Can program alerts; sync online with Google Calendar
iPod - Music (usually Chicago blues), Podcasts
Timer - I'm always surprised how often I use this
Calculator - always handy, no need for an extra gadget
                                Notes - Lists, info, etc

                                Recommended Apps
ToDo - Used with Calendar for Getting Things Done My life would crumble without this.
                                - sync online with Toodledo (Toodledo also has an iPhone app now, but I already had ToDo)
Grocery IQ - Excellent shopping list app
