  • since my last post I have had 3 more no drive, no spend days.

Those chicken legs I bought Tue are HUGE. 5 ¾ lb ($2.83) is ONLY 6 pieces. I expected 7-8. I guess I will have 6 thigh meals and 3 drum meals. Cooked up on Thur-2 as oven fried, 2 as BBQ and 2 as lemon, oregano, parsley. One of each will be frozen. That way the tastes (and sides) are different so I don’t get bored. Had an oven fried thigh for dinner.

    • I went and looked for expired items at HEB this morning. Wit the Fresh or Free Policy, you can take a good item if there is a bad one on the shelf. I surprisingly enough cleaned house! The Manager was upset, but I think it's just because they were caught slipping, and I walked away with almost $40 of free groceries. Yey me!

      • Last week I cooked up all that chicken. This week I batch cooked burgers, browned ground meat, hot dogs and 3 servings of steak. That is it for major (entree) cooking thru next week.

So far (6 days) this month I have had 3 no drive, no spend days. Fri will be a drive spend day as I will see my Dad & do my errands/fresh produce/Aldi shopping.

        • It has been a LOOONG time since anyone has posted. I guess summer and vacation times does NOT lend itself to being frugal for most but since I am unemployed I still have to be VERY frugal.

I have had 11 nor drive, no spend day thru the 20th so far this month.

            • i had what I call a controlled drive day (<5 mi rt) on Thur. I have been told by my Dr I NEED to do weight bearing excercise like walking, esp since I stopped working and put on >10 lb. I have given myself EVERY excuse in the book: too hot, cold, humid, wet.....However I MUST do this. Therefore, I went to my closest all indoor access mall and walked for 30 minutes.

Only 1 store was already open when I went at 9 am and I ONLY shop there when I have a coupon plus 1 nail place that costs WAAAY too much compared to where I go so no temptation to shop or spend.

I think I will do this 2-3x/week on days I am not doing my shpping/errands/visit my Dad. i also need to increase my time, distance and speed.

              • Bought small, wide-mouth jars of jalapeños at price lower than canning jars. Will can crab apple jelly in them. The jalapeños will go on nachos, sandwiches, and marinade.

The crab apples were free, nice big tasty ones.

                • I've been watching to buy some cute, large size buttons for a couple of kids' sewing projects. I had different ideas for how to get them and had been watching for an opportunity.

Yesterday one of my ideas panned out. I bought 6 elastic ponytail holders at the dollar store. They had large, decorative buttons attached. Since the elastic was no good, they were on sale, $0.25. So, 12 buttons for $0.25! I could easily have paid $12-30 for them new at a sewing store.

                  • Went for outings with my toddler which didnt include making a line a paying an entrance fee.
                    This weekend we went to:

The pet store (and we dont have pets)
Whole Foods, for some reason he likes it, but bought nothing
The building's pool. Ok, I did spend some of the sun block for this one

Other than that I just spent on gas, but the farther away was half a mile. I guess we could have walked...

                      • Totaled 7 no drive days (WAAAY below my goal) and 13 no spend days (20% UNDER my goal).

NOT good. Will need to be VERY careful in Sept.

Have not put gas in the car since 8/20. However, gas is still up around here so prob will not fill today just put in $XX because I believe gas prices will be falling a bit more now that the hurricaine is over & kids are back to school.

                        • I turned the end of carrots, an eggplant, broccoli rabe, onion and other veggies into vegetable stock. Now I wont have to buy vegetable stock when I make lentils later this week.

                          • Actually did this several days ago. I had bought Philsbury grand biscuits 8/pkg on a sale w/a coupon. I made some to go w/a couple dinners last week. Then to use up the last 4 I made my own cheese/ham/egg biscuits. I used 3 oz of cheese from a 0.99 pkg, ham from a pkg of deli ends and eggs I paid o/99/dz. Ate 1 & three went into the freezer for later. They are bigger, better and cheaper than the fast food value menu sandwiches.

                            • There is a new grocery type store opening today on my route to see my Dad. From the ad it appears they are a Sams/Costco/BJ type store w/o the membership fee.

Also from the ad it seems they are giving FREE breakfast (8-11) & lunch (11-?) today. Guess where I plan to be about 9 am this morning. If it is true I will stop back for lunch.

I did go to their web site on Sun but it was NOT yet active for my area. Without confirmation I probably would NOT spend the time & gas chasing it but since I am going to help w/Dad's PT today & need to hit another store in the same location I will check it out.

                              • Let's get this thread going again

Yesterday my husband cooked a turkey. I bought several at Thanksgiving to eat later because they were $ .24/ lb. Today I will be boiling the carcas for broth/stock. Leftovers will be frozen for future meals.

Also yesterday hubby and I purchased chuck roast at $1.99/lb and ground it ourselves for hamburger meat. I love to do that as it is so much leaner for a fraction of the reg price. We vacuum sealed 8 lbs. Love my foodsaver. Got it around Christmas for half price with a coupon code. Later ordered a bunch of bags and saved over 50% with a sale and coupon code.

I unplugged 13 items yesterday that were easily accesable. Every little bit helps.
