  • What Frugal Thing .....- Part II

Since the old thread went MIA a few hours short of 3 days ago I am restarting it today.

What frugal thing did you do today?

I will start and since I am a morning person, I generally report on the previous day BUT right now I am catching up w/all my notes from Tuesday.

My 92 y/o dad has been rotating between the hospital & a rehab place for 2 months now. Many of the meals he orders come w/packets of salad dressing, mayo, ketchup and/or mustard. He uses very little of these. If I am visiting at meal time I take the extra. He will NOT miss and I am ahead for packing lunches and/or filling my own bottles.

Wed was a no drive, no spend day but that is the last of that for this week. Thur I went to see DD2 & DGS1 (82 mi rt). We did lunch out (DD bought so no spend + leftovers) and some shopping (CVS w/$5 Halloween coupons = no spend). I thought about picking up something for dinner but since I planned a crazy Fri I just went home and had a salad & eggs. Didn’t want/need the extra spend. Fri I planned to go to a cosmetology school and have a mani/pedi (<1/2 the price of our cheapest local nail places) as I have a wedding on Sat – so another drive/spend day. However, could not get an appointment so going on Sat morning. Guess I will get lunch out Sat so not to ruin mani.

Fri will end up being a drive, spend day as I NEED a haircut & want to visit my Dad since I did not yesterday. However, since I am going to be home in the morning I am going to do some meal prep (meat balls & meatloaf), laundry & wash out the fridge.

While I am out on Sat I am going to try to hit a CVS that may have both ads running. I have been told that the store mgr can activate the new Sun sales on Sat. This is sale prices ONLY, EB deals are activated by corp. Since I have a $3/15 CVS coupon I am going to try for the razor (also mfg coupon + EB back) from this week and cat food that starts on Sun (BOGO sale + mfg coupon). Will fill in if/as needed w/$1 items (unless the scanner gives me something GREAT).

Wow, the original What Frugal Thing thread is gone? That thread was years old. It was like a small book. It had a lot of tips in it if one were to read all the way through it.

Marvholly, I think you might like to start a blog on this site, as have something to add nearly every day! When you blog, a link to your mist recent entry appears here in the forums each time you post to any thread.

Anyhow, my most recent frugalism is simply a vow to be patient so that I can find a very simple tool for which I expect to pay about $1 for quality as opposed to paying $5 for a junki-fied jazzed up, but poor quality version. I need a "church key" punch style can opener. (I ruined mine by dropping it on the stove, placing a pan on top of it, and "cooking" it until the metal became un-tempered.) The ones at the grocery store are junk. Might look for one in at an antique mall in the booths that have odd collections of not really antique kitchen gadgets.

I had bought an overstock/clearance 20 oz pkg of ground turkey a couple days ago for 0.99. This morning I mixed it w/some rehydrated TVP and seasonings; then divided 1/3 & 2/3. First third became meatballs w/added seasonings. Second, larger batch became individual meatloaves w/grated carrot & zucchini added. Ended up w/9 servings of meat for my 0.99.

Check out garage sales & flea markets for your church key. If desparate PM me as I have several.

        Where is everybody???

I am going to a wedding today. Early this am I pulled out my black silk dress clutch. Whoops. On one corner the material had worn away exposing the white frame. Grabbed my trusty black marker and covered the white. Now I do NOT have to rush out to buy a replacement. Also, since I would be in a rush I would probably ‘settle’ for something I was not really in love with and/or pay more than I normally would or should. I know exactly how old this one is – bought it for DD’s wedding 8/2003. I have probably used it 6 times but I do not remember what I paid.

Actually, I should start watching/shopping for a replacement. It is so old that this one is not large enough for my wallet, keys, cell phone…….and I need tissues tonight too.

I have not had a mani/pedi since mid-June. A friend told me about a school <3 mi from my house that does the combo for 60% less than my next closest place (1 1/4 mi). I will ‘spend’ the miles for that kind of money. Its saves nearly as much as I spend on gas in a week.

A few weeks ago I had to go into the city. I took public transportation. You put your money in a vending machine & get a card to ‘feed’ the entry turnstile. Cards are size & weight of those fake cc we sometimes get w/cc offers. Mine is now serving as my bookmark. DD2 reminded me about these cards since she gave her son a ‘cc’ from a mailing (made out to John Doe).

Marvholly, I cannot imagine buying a bookmark. Any ol' slip of paper will do for me. Sometimes, though, I have cut handsome strips off of a greeting card for bookmarks.

Did all the balljoints on our truck today. Probably saved around $500-600 dollars in labor compared to having a shop do it.

I have also been know to use those peskey cards that come in my (FREE) magazines and post it notes but these cards hold up MUCH better/longer. I have been using this one since the end of Aug. I have NEVER in my life (64 years) bought a book mark.

Sunday was a drive/spend day for me. I visited my Dad (20+ mi rt) and went to the dollar store for planned purchases ($2) & my Sun paper. Also grabbed the coupon sections from my Dad's paper. I will make the cost of my dollar store purchases back on the coupons I KNOW I will use and I will use both my & Dad's coupons on a couple things for him that I do NOT need/use - fixodent or already have a good stock of (Colgate-CVS this week FREE).

Monday was no drive, no spend.
I made a batch of cream of….cauliflower soup from some tired cauliflower, chicken broth, seasonings and skim milk powder.
Gathered up some nice suits, jackets and shirts of late DH to take into the consignment shop(s) on my drive/spend day (Tue).

ANYBODY else care or should I just let this thread die?

No drive, no spend on Wed.
Oven dried a tired red bell pepper-already have frozen some & used some in my sanwich for lunch. Will use more on Thur.

I have NOT eaten out at all yet this month. I generally allow myself 3-4/month up to spending a TOTAL of $X. I should be able to do at least one nice meal at this rate.

Well, I care, cause I started the original thread several years ago. I had a no use gas day a few days ago. I have not run the heat or air yet this month.

I bought a Groupon yesterday and a few things at WAG & CVS. The groupon is on my cc and I already put the $$ aside out of my eat out money to pay the bill. Spent $4 for $10 in food at a local sandwich place. To me, this is a CHEAP test to see if it really works and how I am treated when I redeem the emailed coupon. I would spend >$4 at McD or another fast food place.

All the WAG & CVS items were paid for w/RR, EB, coupons and gift cards.
