Monday, May 25, 2026, is Memorial Day. Since many people get the day off from work, it can be a convenient time to run errands or take care of financial tasks. However, because Memorial Day is a federal holiday, many businesses and government-related services close for the day. If you’re wondering, “Are banks open on Memorial Day 2026?” here’s what you need to know.

Are Banks Open on Memorial Day 2026?

No, banks are generally not open on Memorial Day 2026. Most banks close on federal holidays because the Federal Reserve observes those holidays as well. Since Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25, 2026, the majority of bank branches across the United States will be closed for the day.

However, there can be a few exceptions. Some branches located inside grocery stores, retail stores, or supermarkets may choose to open with reduced hours. Even then, many in-store branches still remain closed on federal holidays. If you need in-person banking services, it’s a good idea to contact your local branch before heading out.

Fortunately, online banking, mobile banking apps, and ATMs usually remain available on Memorial Day. Keep in mind that transactions such as wire transfers, ACH payments, direct deposits, and check processing may not fully process until the next business day.

Are Credit Unions Open on Memorial Day 2026?

Like traditional banks, most credit unions also close on Memorial Day. Credit unions generally follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule, so the majority of branches will not open on Monday, May 25, 2026.

As with banks, there may be a few exceptions for branches located in retail settings. Some credit unions may also offer limited drive-thru services or ATM access even when lobby services are unavailable. Checking with your nearest branch ahead of time is the best way to avoid an unnecessary trip.

Bank and Credit Union 2026 Holiday Closures

While banks and credit unions technically create their own schedules, most align their closures with the federal holiday calendar. That means you can usually predict when banks will close by checking the Federal Reserve holiday schedule.

Here’s an overview of the typical bank and credit union holiday closures for 2026:

  • New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 19
  • Presidents Day – Monday, February 16
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 25
  • Juneteenth – Friday, June 19
  • Independence Day (observed) – Friday, July 3
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 7
  • Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day – Monday, October 12
  • Veterans Day – Wednesday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 26
  • Christmas Day – Friday, December 25

Additionally, banks and credit unions are typically closed on Sundays, so they are also unavailable during some non-federal holidays that fall on Sundays, such as Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day.

Do you ever wish banks stayed open on Memorial Day, or do holiday closures rarely affect your plans? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
