Presidents’ Day—officially Washington’s Birthday—is a federal holiday that falls on the third Monday of February. In 2026, the holiday lands on Monday, February 16. While most retailers and grocery stores remain open, federal offices and financial institutions observe the holiday. For investors, the key question is: Is the stock market open on Presidents’ Day?

The answer is no. The major U.S. markets close in observance of the holiday.

Will the Stock Market Be Open on Presidents’ Day 2026?

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ both close on Presidents’ Day. You can trade normally on Friday, February 13, 2026 (regular hours) and Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (markets reopen at 9:30 a.m. EST).

There is no trading on Monday, February 16.

Will NASDAQ Be Open on Presidents’ Day 2026?

No. NASDAQ follows the same holiday schedule as the NYSE, so it will also be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026.

Will the Bond Market Be Open on Presidents’ Day 2026?

No. The U.S. bond market—regulated by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA)—also closes on Presidents’ Day.

If you need to complete bond transactions, you must do so before market close on Friday, February 13, or after markets reopen on Tuesday, February 17.

Stock Market Holidays in 2026

The NYSE and NASDAQ close for the following holidays in 2026:

  • New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 19
  • Presidents’ Day (Washington’s Birthday) – Monday, February 16
  • Good Friday – Friday, April 3
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 25
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day – Friday, June 19
  • Independence Day (Observed) – Friday, July 3*
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 7
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 26
  • Christmas Day – Friday, December 25

*Because July 4, 2026, falls on a Saturday, the holiday is observed on Friday, July 3.

Early‑Close Days in 2026

The stock market typically closes early (1 p.m. EST) on:

  • The day before Independence Day (Thursday, July 2, 2026)
  • Black Friday (Friday, November 27, 2026)
  • Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24, 2026)

Presidents’ Day does not affect early‑close schedules.

Why It Matters for Investors

If you actively trade or manage investments, knowing the holiday schedule helps you avoid delays in order execution, settlement times, fund transfers, and bond market activity.

Although the stock market often aligns with federal holidays, it does not follow the federal schedule perfectly, so checking dates each year is essential.

Readers, how do you plan to spend your Presidents’ Day weekend?
