Is Target Closed on Columbus Day 2025?

Columbus Day is observed on the second Monday in October. In 2025, that falls on October 13. Although it is a federal holiday (used historically to mark Columbus’s arrival in the Americas), many states and localities now also recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day (or similarly named holidays) instead. Some schools and government offices close in observance, but most retail stores remain open.

Columbus Day and Its Controversy

As a federal holiday, Columbus Day leads to closures for government offices, post offices, banks, and schools in many areas. However, in recent years, a growing number of states and cities have shifted to observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Native Americans’ Day, or other names instead of—or alongside—Columbus Day, to better acknowledge the history and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

Is Target Closed on Columbus Day?

No, Target is not closed for Columbus Day 2025. Target generally does not observe Columbus Day as a full-day closure.

Retail reporting of Target’s 2025 holiday schedule indicates that Target typically remains open on federal holidays (except for certain major ones). Thus, on Monday, October 13, 2025, most Target stores will operate under their regular Monday hours (or close times close to that).

What Are Target’s Usual Holiday / Monday Hours?

While hours can vary by location, here’s a rough guideline:

  • Monday – Friday: ~ 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: ~ 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (some stores may stay open later)
  • Sunday: ~ 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (or similar)

These are typical hours listed for many Target locations.

However, actual hours on Columbus Day may slightly differ in certain locations (like extended hours in big metro areas or shortened hours in smaller markets). Some Target stores list their Columbus Day hours in store-specific schedules—for example, one New York City store shows it is open on Monday, October 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

If you plan to shop early or late, it’s wise to check your local store’s hours via the Target store locator or the Target mobile app.

Why Target Stays Open on Holidays (Except a Few)

Target’s policy is to keep stores open on most holidays, with exceptions for:

  • Easter Sunday
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

These days are typically full closures. So, while many restaurants and services may shutter on federal holidays, Target keeps its doors open on Columbus Day so shoppers still have access.

What Shopping Looks Like on Columbus Day

Because many stores are open, you may find:

  • Regular weekly sales are still active
  • Clearance deals on seasonal items (for example, leftover summer stock or back-to-school merchandise)
  • Local variations in promotions, so check your store’s ad

Also, store crowding might be lighter earlier in the day, since some people assume everything is closed on a federal holiday.

Still Check Your Local Target’s Hours

If you’re wondering, “Is Target closed on Columbus Day 2025?”, the answer is no—Target is expected to remain open during its usual store hours on Monday, October 13, 2025 (or hours close to its typical Monday schedule). If you plan to shop early in the morning or late at night, I recommend checking your local Target’s hours via their website or app just to be safe.
