What Is the Real Money-Saving Potential of Meal Prepping?

December 23, 2024 by Susan Paige

Meal prepping – you’ve heard it everywhere, but what’s the big deal?

For those looking for a way to cut down on grocery bills, cooking time, and healthcare costs, meal prepping is a simple solution.

Buy in bulk, cook in bulk, and save in bulk.

Let’s dive into all the ways meal prepping can save you money…

The unique money-saving potential of meal prepping

Reduce the stress on your wallet from take-out

Dining out or taking away is an experience in itself, but one that will eventually break the bank. While meal prepping may not be as exciting as take-out, your everyday meals are a fraction of the cost.

Did you know that your favorite $10 green smoothie can be made for as little as a few bucks? You could likely buy the ingredients for 5+ smoothies for $10.

You can save loads on everyday meals like this, and when you dine out, the experience will be much more enjoyable.

Cut down on grocery costs when buying in bulk

Remember that time you bought all those curry ingredients, only to spend more than the cost of a take-out curry? That’s because you weren’t buying in bulk!

In general, the bigger the packets are, the less you pay per pound. Take this 1lb packet of brown lentils from Walmart. $2 doesn’t sound so bad, right? Well, if you bought the 4lb option, you’re paying only $6 – that’s 25% cheaper per pound.

Now, if you were to meal prep 10 curries at once, it’d cost you a whole lot less than the take-out option.

Meal prepping eliminates losses on wasted foods

Food waste is something we rarely consider when we think about the cost of our food. For every bad apple you throw out, you’re throwing away money!

Instead, prepare a batch of fruit salads and store them in the fridge. Now your apples will last up to 3 times longer, eliminating food waste and ultimately saving you money.

That’s not to say you won’t throw out some old prepped meals. However, the frequency and cost-per-meal that you waste can be greatly reduced with meal prepping.

Free up your time with digital meal-prepping apps

You might be thinking: meal prepping sounds nice, but I can be fussed with all the planning and preparation. Did you forget we’re living in the digital age?

Meal-prepping apps take all the hassle out of planning your meals. Top-tier meal-prepping apps offer recipes, customization, and scalability – some can even write your shopping lists for you!

The only thing to keep in mind is your cyber safety. Tools that help you find out “What’s my IP?” can identify your IP address and location. Secure this private data with strong network encryption.

Eat healthier and see your doctor less

It’s undisputed that cooking at home is usually a much healthier alternative to fast foods loaded with saturated fats. Meal prepping ensures that you get more good meals than bad.

The more you meal prep, the healthier you’ll be – the healthier you are, the less you’ll spend on healthcare as you age. Do healthy meal prepping right, and all but eliminate those regular doctor visits.

Meal prepping makes healthy, happy humans…

Whether the goal is to save money, improve your health, or reduce cooking time – or all of the above – meal prepping is a simple, cost-effective solution.

Throw out those crusty take-out menus and stock your fridge with cheap and nutritious premade meals.
