Are Banks Closed on Veterans Day 2024?

November 7, 2024 by Amanda Blankenship

Are Banks Closed on Veterans Day?

Veterans Day honors current and former members of the armed forces and the sacrifices they’ve made for our country. This year, it falls on Monday, November 11. Since Veterans Day is a federal holiday, many businesses and banks close to observe it. If you have some errands you need to run this week, you may be wondering, are banks closed on Veterans Day? Here’s everything you need to know.

Are Banks Closed on Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is a federal holiday, so most banks close to observe it, including Bank of America, Capital One, Chase Bank, and Wells Fargo. However, some financial institutions may still have branches open on the holiday.

According to GOBanking Rates, HSBC, Citizens Bank, and SunTrust usually stay open on Veterans Day. TD Bank is also open on many federal holidays but will close for Veterans Day this year. So make sure you call ahead to confirm your local bank’s hours even if they’ve been open on holidays in the past.

Are Credit Unions Closed on Veterans Day?

Credit unions typically follow the same holiday schedule as banks. So most credit unions will also be closed this Veterans Day.

Online Banking is Still Available

Although your local bank or credit union will most likely be closed on Veterans Day, you can usually access the drive-thru ATM if you need to. You can also use your bank’s website and mobile app to deposit checks, transfer funds, pay bills, and check your balance.

But if you run into problems with your bank’s app, you may not be able to speak to a representative until after Veterans Day. Customer service departments are usually closed or only open for a limited number of hours on federal holidays.

It’s also important to keep in mind that electronic transfers are routed through the Federal Reserve, which is closed on Veterans Day. As a result, your online transactions may take longer to process. Any checks you deposit will likely take an extra day to clear as well, so make sure you plan ahead for these slight delays.

Bank Holidays 2024

Veterans Day isn’t the only holiday banks and credit unions observe. Most bank branches also close for ten other holidays, including:

  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas
  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Fourth of July
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s Day

Some banks and credit unions also shut their doors or have limited hours on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and Black Friday.

However, banks aren’t required to close on federal holidays, so some branches may still be open on these holidays. TD Bank, for example, stays open on Presidents’ Day and Indigenous People’s Day. So if you need to take care of an important financial task, you still have options. And as always you’ll have access to online banking, though your transactions may take a little longer to process on major holidays.
